One of the first things Jamie Medved ever said to me was, "It's good to see good people." A statement which resonates with me to this day. So much so I actually started and ended my speech on Steph and I's wedding day with it. It's a statement that helps me remember those whom I keep in my circle, and those in my circle I'd go above and beyond for. Sometimes however, we lose sight of why we're doing what we're doing, and those we do it for, and that can come back to bite us if we don't address it. It's something both Jamie and I have struggled with over the years and something we both continually work on today.
Jamie is the founder, owner and operator of Retreat Lifestyle, a store that promotes wellbeing and positivity through their range of stylish diffusers, aromatherapy oils, candles, salt lamps, gifts, homewares & all things mood related. Along with this, he has a semi-professional basketball career spanning almost two decades with the Geelong Supercats in the NBL1 and spent five years in the USA chasing his basketball dream through the high school and college system where his desire to build a winning culture was forged.
In our conversation today we address his background and how it shaped him as a small business owner, and captain of arguably one of the most successful sporting associations in Australia, the mental health struggles that he's faced over the last few years and how he's still dealing with them each and every day and how family heartache completely shifted the way he carries himself as a man, a father and a husband.
You can find Jamie on Instagram (@jlm5210) or most likely on the shop floor in Retreat (retreatlifestyle.com)
I thoroughly enjoyed sitting down with Med for this conversation. Full of honest and raw insights, it's a chat that hopefully allows you to see life through a different lens.
