Hopping on a call with Molly felt like one of those moments in life where you dive into a conversation with someone you had just met for the first time and it felt like you had known each other for years. This much needed conversation with Molly about the layers of life within dance and how one transitions created a space for all those dancers who may struggle during this phase and it offered me some courage for when I come to this point . We begin to understand our upbringing and we learn to think and speak for ourselves, breaking down our foundations and rebuilding is one of the toughest experiences in life. It feels never-ending, but then again looking back the growth you see and the people who begin to show up and stay in your life make it all seem as if its coming out of a book. Kerry Nicholls founder of Kerry Nicholls Dance spends her time offering choreographic mentorship, career consulting, and supporting current artists within their established careers. Interviewing Senator Derek Kitchen was a really heart warming experience. To share such an intimate conversation with one of our leaders who is also a small business owner and how he is coping during this time of quarantine I think will be beyond comforting for our community to hear. Derek has taken the initiative in changing our community from Kitchen vs Hebert, which challenged Utah's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and it was the first state to see success. To his policies in relation to women's rights that he has time and again brought to the legislative with a goal in mind of seeing success. We can also count of Derek for the protection of public lands, healthcare, education, affordable housing, support towards small business, homeless services, clean air transit, and marijuana legalization. Derek and I talk about the routines he has implemented in relation to Covid-19 and how he sees the impact it is having on our community and he is a resource to lean on. I really enjoyed my time with Krystal on The Chelsea Keefer Podcast last week when we dove into her current thesis on Shame in dance at UC Irvine. Krystal and I have been friends for over ten years and she has offered me a lot of guidance along the way. Krystal has the unconventional path within dance, she has worked with some truly amazing choreographers and has tried many different avenues whether performing with a company or giving commercial dance a try. Krystal is currently finishing up her Masters in Dance at UC Irvine and has really found a passion for teaching and how important communication is to our up and coming dancers of this world. How we all need to hold ourselves accountable for our behaviors and recognize that we are the ones to make the change within the current authoritatian teaching methods in dance. Understand that yes this approach is what can make a career happen in the sense of understanding the sacrifice that is needed, but we can offer a different style of vocabulary where positive feedback and less reaction can create a healthier environment for all. Ursula Perry and I have been enjoying each others company for the past three years. She is a woman that can walk into a room and grab your attention with how purposefully one can hold themselves. I have admired this woman since the day I met her. Watching her perform is one of the greatest gifts I have received and sharing a conversation about life with her insight, you really cant ask for a better human being to surround yourself with. Ursula and I dive into the deeper layers of what a dancers career path can look like, the patience that is needed, the vast layers of expression, and how one can process life through movement. Kathryn Morgan a Soloist with Miami City Ballet shares her triumphant story of coming back to ballet after 7 years of quitting. A prodigy with New York City Ballet in her early twenties was faced with an auto immune disease that set her on a different path. Kathryn shares her vulnerable and badass self with us and how she has continuously persevered.
