  • Ep 145: This League Pays Student Athletes

On this week's episode of the world's first and only bi-city podcast (this may or may not actually be true), Obes and Cha are joined by anti-trust economist Andy Schwarz. Andy is the brainchild behind the Historical Basketball League (HBL) which looks to be a financial boon for HBCUs. We asked him why he decided to start this league, which would pay players as employees of the league during the summer months, why he chose HBCUs specifically, and how the HBL will go about paying players. Obes also secretly enjoyed having another economist on the show, we're really great people ya know.

Obes and Cha then discuss Killer Mike's ill-fated video with the NRA where he says, among other things, that "everyone had guns in Wakanda". Why did he make this video and what did he hope to gain from it? Additionally, what did the *NRA* hope to gain from this? Is this Bernie '16 all over again?

Finally, the Houston Rockets are rolling and starting to separate themselves from a badly beaten up Golden State Warriors team who are without all 4 of their all stars. With the news that Steph Curry is out for the rest of the regular season and most likely the first round of the playoffs, does this change the way Cha looks at the Rockets' chances of winning an NBA title?

Opening song: "Thinking of You" x Lord Echo

  • Ep 144: March Crassness

When you mess with the best there's no need for the rest. Hey, that rhymed! Welcome to another episode of the podcast your grandmother loves to hate, The Chicken Social. This week, newly engaged Teflon Teej and Courtney Cox join us to talk about the ongoing NCAA tournament. How are their brackets looking, did they expect to see a 16 seed beat a 1 seed, and did Michael Porter Jr. make a huge mistake by playing this season after being injured for most of the season? Additionally, how do we all reconcile the fun of watching the NCAA tournament with the knowledge that these players are being exploited.

Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump fire FBI deputy director, Andrew McCabe 2 days before his official retirement. Is he gonna snitch to Robert Mueller? (yes) Are Trump's assertions that McCabe misled investigators accurate? (probably not)

Bombings in Austin. Up to 6 bombs were detonated in the last week, killing at least 2 people while injuring several other. The initial victims were members of prominent black and Latino families. These are people have also been active in the fight against racism and for equality.

  • Ep 143: feminism.

Welcome to yet another episode of the official episode of Deep Sea exploration, The Chicken Social. On this week's episode, Monique Henry (@meauxhenry) is back to talk with us about feminism. Obes had a female friend tell him that the current feminist movement was "nonsense" and that women's empowerment had "gone too far". How did Monique feel about how far women's empowerment has gone and how much farther does she feel it needs to go?

After that, Obes and Cha look at what may become a major theme in the 2018 Mid-term elections: Trump voter disappointment. Some Trump voters are openly acknowledging that Trump's behavior is embarrassing. How surprising is that? Additionally, was it necessary for people to see just how bad things could get under a president like Donald Trump?

Last but not least, the Houston Rockets are up 1.5 games on the Golden State Warriors and Cha is excited. What are the chances that the Rockets hold this lead and will they be favored against GSW in the playoffs?

All that and more, this week on The Chicken Social.

  • Ep 142: Lamar Jackson, Quarterback.

Welcome to another episode of the podcast Barack Obama described as, "........", The Chicken Social. HumbleTeej, or as we like to call him, Teflon Teej, is back once again. This time, Obes asks him about how the dynamic between T'Challa and Killmonger in Black Panther relates to people within the Diaspora. Namely, Obes wonders how Teej's interactions with African immigrants and first generation Americans influenced his viewing of the film.

Next, Obes dusts off an old segment, the Chicken Fried Take, to talk about how Tom Izzo frustrates him to no end. How is that a man could have 2 lottery picks on his team and still lose 4 games to college opponents? Has a 29-4 season ever felt like such a disappointment? PROBABLY NOT!!!

Last, but certainly not least, Lamar Jackson goes to the NFL combine. Amidst talk of NFL teams, plural, wanting him to workout at WR, how did our QB1 handle himself? Did he run any routes? Did he amaze the front office execs in his interviews? Did he have chocolate ice cream for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? We have the answers to all but one of those questions, you'll have to listen to find out which ones.

All that and more, this week on The Chicken Social.

  • Ep 141: Zaza Actin' Caca (w/@EricTrillman_)

Welcome to another episode of your mother, brother, and sister's favorite podcast, The Chicken Social. Your dad will eventually come around, give it time. We're patient people. This week, the youngest guest in our show's illustrious history, Eric Trillman, joins us to talk about the latest "scandal" in men's college basketball. Players are allegedly getting paid we wanna know a few things: a) why aren't they being paid more? b) why is this against the rules? and c) things you'll have to listen to the episode to find out.

After that, Obes and Cha look at the building momentum towards real gun control in the United States. What's the difference this time around and is the NRA really as formidable as we've been led to believe they are?

Last but not least, the boys take a deeper look at Zaza Pachulia's recent antics. Is he a dirty player, or is he the dirtiest player? Questions that need answers.

  • Ep 140: Black Hollywood (w/@BostonJerry)

Welcome to another episode of the only show that told you Black Panther was going to be a great movie, The Chicken Social. This week, BostonJerry is back to talk to us about Robert Mueller's latest indictments against 13 Russian operatives. What does this mean for the ongoing investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump campaign? Perhaps more importantly, though, Obes, Cha, and Jerry talk about "news illiteracy". Why can't people tell the difference between real and fake news?

In this week's Sports Zone, Cha goes all the way in on the game of hockey. Why's it so racist against black people? Why are hockey fans so insecure? Is hockey even good? Obes and Cha answer all of those questions.

And then, finally, Obes and Cha talk about the implications of Black Panther's incredible success. What new opportunities will arise for the stars of the cast and crew as a result of this film? More broadly, though, what will the impact be for kids growing up going forward, now that this movie is out?

  • Ep 139: #WhiterOlympics (w/@Fatt_Stacks)

This week, on another episode of the best podcast you've ever (or never) heard, Ashley (@Fatt_Stacks) is back. We asked her what she thought about the Winter Olympics...she has a lot of thoughts about the Winter Olympics, affectionately known as the Whiter Olympics. They lose money, the winter games are as white as the surroundings, and they're rampant with human rights violations. Should the Olympics even continue? We answer the question.

Then, as the Rockets take flight, Houston is *right there*. They've added Brandan Wright and look to add Joe Johnson soon as well. Are they the best team in the NBA? What's gonna happen if/when the Rockets meet the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals?

And last, but certainly not least...Black Panther. It's finally here fam, and it's lit. It's so so lit. What does this film mean to Obes and Cha and where should you go to see the movie?

All that and more, this week on The Chicken Social.
