This is for the Ashley O'Neil Podcast - “The NICU Expert: What Every Parent Wishes They Knew on Day One” In this episode of The Childbirth Attorney Podcast, I sit down with Ashley O’Neil, a NICU mom, author, podcaster, advocate, and founder of The O’Neil Foundation for Healing.
Ashley has spent years listening to NICU parents tell their stories, interviewing medical professionals, writing books for NICU families, building a podcast around the NICU experience, and living the journey herself with her son, Kolin.
So I wanted to ask her the questions parents actually want answered.
What is the most overrated NICU advice?
What is the worst thing you can say to a NICU mom?
What is the best thing you can say?
Is Google helpful or dangerous?
Should parents ask questions during rounds?
Should they get a second opinion?
Is “be strong” actually terrible advice?
What does advocacy look like inside the NICU?
And if Ashley could go back to Day One of her own NICU journey, what would she tell herself?
We also talk about what happens after discharge, when the NICU stay is technically over but families are suddenly navigating therapies, services, equipment, appointments, and an entirely new version of parenting.
Ashley also shares the story behind The O’Neil Foundation for Healing, a nonprofit she created to support families facing grief, medical trauma, caregiving, and loss.
And near the end of this episode, I ask her one question I especially wanted answered:
What would you say to the parent listening to this podcast at 2:00 a.m., sitting beside an incubator, scared, exhausted, and unsure what comes next?
Her answer is one every NICU parent should hear.

If your baby is in the NICU and you cannot stop Googling, cannot remember what the doctor just told you, keep replaying every decision, or feel like your brain will not shut off — this episode is for you.
For NICU Awareness Month, I sit down with Dr. Katherine Nunn, an HCPC-registered clinical psychologist, writer, and a NICU mother. Katherine understands this conversation from two very different places: as a psychologist who understands trauma and the brain, and as a mother who has lived through the NICU, surgeries, separation, and the terrifying uncertainty of not knowing what comes next..
And we talk about something NICU parents desperately need to hear:
When your brain goes into survival mode, it does not mean you are falling apart.
It means your brain is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Your brain is wired to protect you. When something threatens your baby, it starts scanning for danger, searching for answers, replaying information, anticipating what could happen next, and trying to regain control in a situation that may feel completely uncontrollable.
Katherine also gives parents practical tools they can actually use in the middle of that fear — holding ice, splashing cold water on your face, naming and writing down exactly what you are feeling, or simply calling someone and saying out loud, “This is what I am feeling right now.”
This episode is not about telling NICU parents to “stay positive.”
It is about helping them understand what is happening inside their own minds while they are trying to survive what may be the most frightening experience of their lives.
So if you are sitting beside an incubator feeling lost, confused, scared, exhausted, or completely unlike yourself, I want you to hear this conversation.
Your brain is not failing you.
It is trying to protect you.
And there are ways to help it through.

What should a doula actually do in the delivery room? And where is the line between advocacy and stepping outside the doula role? In this episode of The Childbirth Attorney Podcast, Gina Mundy sits down with labor and delivery nurse Colette Wagholikar and doula Rachel Myers for a candid conversation about the do’s and don’ts of doula support during childbirth. They discuss when a doula should speak up, when she should step back, how to advocate without giving medical advice, whether doulas should understand fetal monitoring, what to do if a family does not feel comfortable with their nurse, and how to help parents ask better questions without creating unnecessary conflict with the medical team. They also talk about what effective advocacy looks like in real time, how doulas can support informed decision-making, and the mistakes doulas should avoid when emotions are high and the room gets complicated. This episode is not just for doulas. It is for expecting parents, partners, grandparents, and anyone who may be in the delivery room. Because good advocacy is not about taking over the room. It is about knowing when to speak, what to ask, and when to step back.

We tackle the issue every pregnant woman worries about but few discuss openly: abdominal separation (diastasis recti). Learn what you can do during pregnancy to prevent it and how to bounce back faster postpartum. Plus, we expose the truth about pregnancy nutrition. Remember that viral claim about needing only 50,000 extra calories during the entire pregnancy? We break down what that actually looks like and why understanding your body's real needs matters more than ever.
