The Childhood of an Avoidant Attachment

Listen Later

Episode 4: In this episode, I explore the avoidant attachment style adaptation. I discuss the characteristics of the dismissive avoidant and explain how childhood experiences contribute to this attachment style. I also highlight the role of eye contact and the lack of attunement - the ability to read emotions in avoidant individuals. I share personal examples and offer strategies for both avoidant individuals and their partners so they can create a sense of safety and connection.

Takeaways

  • Avoidant attachment is characterized by a preference for independence and a tendency to withdraw or shut down when feeling encroached upon.
  • Childhood experiences of neglect, rejection, or task-focused parenting can contribute to the development of avoidant attachment.
  • Avoidant individuals often struggle with eye contact and have difficulty identifying and expressing their needs.
  • The concept of the relational field can help avoidant individuals become more aware of the importance of connection.
  • Partners of avoidant individuals can support them by giving them space and time, and by gently orienting them to the relational field.
