"The Childish Thingβ by John Metcalfe. First published in Story magazine (1952), collected in "19 Tales of Terror" (ed. H. & W. Burnett, pub. Bantam Books, 1957). Later collected in "Nightmare Jack and Other Stories" (pub. Ash Tree Press, 1998).
