In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the role of music in the Chola Empire, focusing on the Kudumi, a wind instrument depicted in temple sculptures and inscriptions. They discuss how the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur served as a center for musical patronage under Rajaraja Chola I, with detailed records of musicians, instruments, and compositions. The episode examines the Kudumi's construction from brass or silver, its use in temple rituals and royal courts, and its connection to the larger Carnatic tradition. Lucas explains how inscriptions from the Rajarajesvaram temple list 400 devadasis and their specific musical roles, including the players of the Kudumi. The conversation also touches on the sacred geometry of temple spaces designed for acoustics, the cross-cultural links to the conch and nadaswaram, and the decline of the Kudumi after the Chola period. This episode offers a fresh angle on Chola cultural history, moving beyond temples and trade to the vibrant soundscape of medieval Tamil Nadu.

This episode explores the Chola Empire's mastery of temple architecture through the lens of Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of construction. Lucas and Luna unpack how Chola builders like Rajaraja I's chief architect Kunjara Mallan used sacred geometry to align temples like the Brihadeeswarar with cosmic forces. They discuss the recruitment of masons from the Kaveri delta, the role of the traditional guild of sthapatis, and the logistics of quarrying granite from Tiruvannamalai. The episode also touches on the rivalry between Vastu traditions and the influence of Pallava precedents. A battle between cosmic order and innovation unfolds as Lucas describes the engineering marvels behind the 60-ton capstone of the Thanjavur temple. The conversation ends with a reflection on how these builders merged devotion with precision, creating structures that still inspire awe today.

In this episode of The Chola Empire, Lucas and Luna explore the remarkable life and influence of Sembiyan Mahadevi, the queen who shaped Chola religious and political life in the 10th century. As the wife of Gandaraditya Chola and later regent for her son Madhuranthaka (Uttama Chola), she oversaw the construction of dozens of temples, including the Tiruvenkadu temple, and left behind a vast corpus of inscriptions. The conversation examines her role as a patron of Shaivism, her political maneuvering during a succession crisis, and how her temple-building program served as both devotion and statecraft. We also look at the contrasting fates of her branch of the dynasty versus Rajaraja's, and how her legacy was eventually overshadowed by the builder of the Brihadeeswarar Temple. Specific inscriptions, such as the Tiruvenkadu copper plates, are discussed in detail.

In this episode of The Chola Empire, Lucas and Luna explore the forgotten military guilds that underpinned Chola power. While the Ayyavole and Manigramam merchant guilds dominated trade, the Velakkara and Kaikkolar warrior guilds formed the backbone of the Chola army and navy. Lucas explains how the Velakkara were hereditary soldiers who served as palace guards and were also deployed overseas, even being granted land endowments in Sri Lanka. He then turns to the Kaikkolar, a weaver caste that supplied soldiers to Chola armies and also served as temple servants. The episode covers the famous Velakkara inscription from Polonnaruwa, which details a massacre of Chola troops during Vijayabahu's revolt. Lucas also discusses how these guilds were organized, their code of honor, and their eventual decline as the Chola empire waned. The conversation touches on the social mobility these guilds offered and their role in the Chola military economy. Luna's questions help clarify the difference between these guilds and the more famous merchant groups, and how the Kaikkolar's weaving background connected to military service. The episode ends with a reflection on how these guilds illustrate the deep entanglement of war, trade, and religion in the Chola world.

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the Vira Bananju, the legal code that governed the Ayyavole merchant guilds of the Chola Empire. Discover how these 11th-century maritime laws regulated trade, resolved disputes, and protected merchants from pirates across the Indian Ocean. We trace the origins of the code to the Ayyavole inscriptions at Takuapa in modern Thailand, examine its provisions for shipwrecks, debt collection, and caste penalties, and reveal how it undergirded the economic dominance of Tamil merchants from the Kaveri delta to the South China Sea. Along the way, we meet the nagarattar and patinavar, the merchant and seafaring communities, and consider a controversial theory linking the Vira Bananju to the later Lex Mercatoria. A fresh angle on the institutional foundations of Chola trade power.

In this episode, Lucas and Luna dive into the world of the Ayyavole, a powerful guild of Tamil merchants who dominated Indian Ocean trade during the Chola Empire. These traders, known as the 'Five Hundred Lords of Ayyavole,' operated from the 9th to 13th centuries, establishing networks from the Coromandel Coast to Southeast Asia and China. Lucas explains how the Ayyavole were not just merchants but also diplomats, financiers, and patrons of temples, wielding immense influence. He describes their inscriptions, found in places like Takuapa in present-day Thailand and in South India, which detail their trade in spices, textiles, and precious stones. The guild operated under a code of conduct called the Vira Bananju Dharma, or 'law of the heroic merchants.' They also funded temple construction and maintained their own militia. Lucas highlights how the Chola state supported these merchants, granting them autonomy and protection. The episode explores the Ayyavole's role in spreading Tamil culture and Shaivism across the Indian Ocean, and how their decline in the 13th century reflected the broader shifts in trade routes and the rise of other powers. Luna prompts Lucas to elaborate on the guild's internal organization and their interactions with the Chola bureaucracy. The conversation ends with a reflection on how merchant networks shaped medieval globalization.

In 1077, the Chola king Kulottunga I sent a formal embassy to the court of Emperor Shenzong of Song China. It was not the first Chola mission—Rajendra Chola I had dispatched one in 1015—but the 1077 embassy was documented with unprecedented detail in the Song Shi, the official history of the Song dynasty. This episode unpacks what the Chinese records actually say: the Chola envoys arrived in Guangzhou, traveled to the capital Kaifeng, and presented gifts including pearls, ivory, and a unique species of elephant. But the embassy was also a commercial venture: Chinese silk, porcelain, and copper coins flowed back, and the Chola merchants who accompanied the mission continued trading in the ports of Southeast Asia. We explore how these state-sponsored missions fit into the larger story of the Chola Empire's Indian Ocean dominance, the politics of the Srivijaya thalassocracy that controlled the straits, and what the Song records reveal about Chola geopolitical ambitions. Drawing on translations of the Song Shi passages and the work of historian Tansen Sen, we reconstruct a moment when two great empires—one in South India, one in East Asia—connected through diplomacy, trade, and mutual curiosity.
