Jonathan and Saul are both trying to live in the Kingdom. Jonathan seems to understand the security of the Kingdom is found in God. Saul is trying to secure it himself.

Saul doesn’t obeys the Word of the Lord given through Samuel and is rejected as king. A new king who will do God’s will is promised.
