But let each one examine his own works, and then unto himself only he will have the boast, and not unto another. For each one will bear his own load (Galatians 6:4–5).

If anyone regards himself as greater than he truly is, he deceives himself. Such a person is considered nothing (Galatians 6:3). We are cautioned not to be wise in our own estimation (Romans 12:16). Rather, we are called to maintain an accurate understanding of our identity in Christ. When restoring a brother who is caught in a trespass, we must carefully watch ourselves to avoid temptation (Galatians 6:1). This vigilance includes guarding against forming an inflated or inaccurate self-perception.

We are instructed to examine our own works. This examination should focus on identifying what is good, rather than merely seeking out failures. We must consider whether our good works arise from our identity in Christ or if they are motivated by self-effort and a desire to enhance our reputation.

We each bear our own load. Every individual will stand before Christ and give an account for actions performed in the body (2 Corinthians 5:10). Therefore, we must be diligent in how we build our lives. The only true foundation is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). When we stand before Christ, our works will be examined and their true nature revealed (1 Corinthians 3:13). Works rooted in self-effort or self-exaltation will not withstand this testing.

We are called to bear one another’s burdens, which involves relinquishing personal freedoms for the sake of another’s conscience. By patiently supporting the weaknesses of others in love, we fulfill the law of the Christ (Galatians 6:2). Nevertheless, each of us is responsible for our own load. We are encouraged to work diligently to provide for others, rather than taking what we have not earned (2 Thessalonians 3:10). We should not impose our personal standards on others, but instead live out our faith before God (Romans 14:22). Each person will give an account for their own actions (Romans 14:12). Therefore, let us examine our own works and find satisfaction in faithfully expressing the righteousness we have in Christ.

And the LORD visited Sarah as He said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He spoke. And she conceived, and Sarah bore to Abraham a son for his old age for the appointed time which God had spoken with him (Genesis 21:1–2).

Abraham was one hundred years old when the LORD fulfilled His promise to give Sarah a child (Genesis 21:5). He named his son Isaac, referencing his earlier laughter upon hearing that he would have an heir through Sarah (Genesis 17:17). In accordance with his faith, Abraham circumcised Isaac on the eighth day (Genesis 21:4; cf. Genesis 17:10).

Sarah was ninety years old when the LORD enabled her to conceive. In response, she laughed and proclaimed that all who hear of this event would laugh with her (Genesis 21:6–7). Previously, in Genesis 18:12, Sarah had responded with disbelief upon overhearing the LORD’s promise. Now, holding the promised child, her laughter expresses joy.

The Hebrew term rendered as ‘laugh’ encompasses a range of meanings, including disbelief, joy, and mockery. It can also imply erotic or intimate play. Consequently, the context determines whether laughter signifies disbelief, joy, mockery, or, as in Exodus 32:6, inappropriate erotic behavior during idol worship. Abraham and Sarah’s laughter reflected disbelief, while Ishmael’s laughter toward Isaac was an act of mockery.

After Isaac was weaned, Abraham held a great feast (Genesis 21:8). During the celebration, Sarah observed Ishmael mocking (laughing) Isaac (Genesis 21:9), which deeply upset her. She demanded that Abraham expel the bondwoman and her son, asserting that Ishmael would not share in Isaac’s inheritance (Genesis 21:10). Although this request displeased Abraham, the LORD instructed him to comply (Genesis 21:11–12). God further assured Abraham that Ishmael would become the progenitor of a great nation because he was Abraham’s offspring (Genesis 21:13). The following morning, Abraham provided bread and water to Hagar and Ishmael and sent them away, leading them to wander in the wilderness of Beer–sheba (Genesis 21:14).

You have heard it said, “Love your neighbor as yourself and be indifferent to your enemy.” But I say to you, love your enemy, speak well of those who curse you, do what is proper to those who are indifferent to you, and worship concerning those who mistreat you (Matthew 5:43–44).

The Mosaic Law instructs the Israelites to love their neighbors as themselves (Leviticus 19:18). The directive regarding indifference toward enemies originates from interpretive traditions established by Jewish leaders, rather than from the law itself. The question, “Who is your neighbor?” was the subject of extensive debate among Jewish scholars, with many religious leaders asserting that the command applied exclusively to Jews, thereby excluding Gentiles.

Within the context of the Millennial Kingdom, righteousness prevails. Consequently, the Jewish people are instructed to respond to curses with blessings. A curse is understood as an invocation of calamity upon another individual. When faced with indifference, they are to act appropriately, and in cases of mistreatment, they are to direct their worship toward God on behalf of those who wrong them. These responses are intended to cultivate maturity and understanding, enabling individuals to become sons of their heavenly Father.

Jesus subsequently addresses the change in the Law. He questions the merit of expressing love only toward those who reciprocate it, noting that even tax collectors—regarded by Jews as lower than Gentiles—demonstrate such behavior (Matthew 5:47). Instead, the Jewish people are called to exhibit maturity by emulating the conduct of their heavenly Father (Matthew 5:48).

In contrast to both Mosaic and Kingdom Laws, Christians are commanded to love one another as Christ has loved them. During the Last Supper, Jesus introduced this new commandment to his disciples: “A new commandment I give you, in order that you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, in order that you should love one another” (John 13:34). This directive is not a modification of the Mosaic Law, as covenants cannot be altered or annulled once established (Galatians 3:15). This commandment applies specifically to those who are members of the body of Christ, the Church. Through their love for one another, Christians demonstrate to others that they are disciples of Christ (John 13:35).

In issuing the new commandment, Jesus employs a term for “one another” that refers specifically to those of the same kind. The love produced in Christians by the Holy Spirit is not intended to be directed toward the world or worldly things (1 John 2:15). While Christians are encouraged to do good to all people, this particular form of love is reserved for members of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10).

The standard of love within the Church is defined by Christ’s love for it. As stated, “Greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). This concept extends beyond the act of dying for another; it encompasses living in a way that consistently seeks the well-being of fellow Christians (1 John 3:16). Just as Christ’s life is devoted to the Church and he continually intercedes on behalf of believers before the Father, Christians are called to seek the best for one another (Hebrews 7:25).

Do not fear the things you are about to suffer. Behold, the Devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you should be tempted, and you will have tribulation for ten days. You become faithful up to the point of death, and I will give to you the victor’s wreath of life (Revelation 2:10).

The assembly at Smyrna symbolizes the second period of the Church’s existence on earth. This community endured ten cycles of tribulation and poverty, yet remained spiritually rich due to their adherence to sound doctrine (Revelation 2:9). Some individuals within the assembly claimed to be Jews but were not; they are described as belonging to the synagogue of Satan. The Devil’s strategy to infiltrate the Church does not involve introducing overtly wicked individuals to overthrow it. Instead, he places his sons among the faithful (Ephesians 5:6). In the same way that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light to deceive angelic beings, his followers present themselves as ministers of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:14–15). Among these are those who assert that Christians become Jews, a doctrine that later developed during the Sardis period into what is now known as Covenant or Reformed Theology (Revelation 3:1–6).

During this period, the majority of Christians suffered martyrdom due to persecution. However, these trials also served to refine the genuine believers who remained committed to the doctrine originally delivered by the Apostles. Christ acknowledges their works, tribulation, and poverty, and therefore encourages them to remain faithful.

While the Ephesus assembly primarily identified and resisted unbelievers attempting to infiltrate the Church, the Smyrna assembly experienced some degree of infiltration by such individuals. Consequently, a promise is extended to the overcomers—those who base their salvation on the death of Christ on behalf of our sins and His resurrection three days later (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). Those who remain faithful until death will receive the victor’s wreath of life, and the second death will not harm them (Revelation 2:10).

The victor’s wreath of life is awarded to all Christians who endure temptation (James 1:12). The second death refers to the final judgment of all unsaved individuals (Revelation 20:14). The saints from the Smyrna period will participate in the first resurrection at Christ’s return for His Church and, as a result, will not be affected by the second death (Revelation 20:6). This promise applies to all Christians, as they are also overcomers in Christ (1 John 4:4; 5:4). The second death signifies the eternal separation of all unsaved humans and fallen spiritual beings from the life of God (Revelation 21:8).

It seemed fair to declare signs and wonders the Most High God has done before me. His signs are according to greatness and His wonders are according to might. His kingdom reigns into perpetuity, and His dominion is from generation and to generation (Daniel 4:2–3).

Daniel opens chapter four by documenting a decree issued by Nebuchadnezzar. In this decree, the king recounts the signs and wonders performed by the Most High God before him, intending that people of all nations would be informed. The events described represent the third and final encounter Nebuchadnezzar has with the one true God. The purpose of these signs and wonders is to demonstrate that Daniel’s God is sovereign over the kingdoms of humanity.

Before the decree, Daniel was the only one who could reveal the meaning of the king’s dream about the statue representing the four world powers of mankind. In response to this revelation, Nebuchadnezzar built a golden statue for all to worship, declaring that any who do not bow down to this statue would be cast into a burning furnace. Even though Nebuchadnezzar declared that no god could save them, the God of Israel saved Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego from his wrath. Yet, Nebuchadnezzar remained self-absorbed and arrogant about his greatness. His gods were shown to have no strength against the God of Israel; yet, he continued to follow them (Daniel 3:15).

While Nebuchadnezzar was at ease in his palace and prospering, he experienced a dream that caused him fear (Daniel 4:4). Although it could be inferred that Nebuchadnezzar had developed an interest in the God who had previously revealed mysteries to Daniel, he did not initially summon Daniel to interpret the dream. Instead, Daniel was the last to be called before the king.

Following Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, he summoned all the wise men of Babylon—including engravers, astrologers, Chaldeans, and sorcerers—to interpret the dream for him (Daniel 4:6). Unlike the previous occasion, the king disclosed the content of his dream, yet none could provide its interpretation (Daniel 4:7). Eventually, Daniel appeared before the king (Daniel 4:8). Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged that the Spirit of the Most High God resided with Daniel and that no mystery was too difficult for him (Daniel 4:9). The king then recounted the dream to Daniel.

From the mouth of babes and nursing infants, You establish strength because of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and the avenger (Psalm 8:2).

The Hebrew language demonstrates exceptional precision in articulating the nuances of strength, employing eight distinct terms to describe physical, heroic, economic, resolute, political, sovereign, praise-related, and stable forms of strength. Matthew 21:16 provides further insight into the term for strength used in Psalm 8:2: “Out of the mouth of inarticulate babblers and nursing infants you have put in order praise.”

When the chief priests and scribes expressed indignation toward the children in the temple who cried out, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” following Jesus’ expulsion of the money changers, Jesus cited Psalm 8:2. In the Greek text, the term used by Jesus refers to a young child who is an inarticulate babbler, capable of speech but lacking understanding of the words spoken. This term was often applied to individuals of any age who lacked discernment regarding matters they should comprehend; c.f. Hebrews 5:13. In this context, the word “strength” is equated with praise, which is understood as the verbal acknowledgment of God’s character. Thus, in Psalm 8:2, the Hebrew conveys strength as the act of offering praise, establishing strength as a reflection of divine character.

In this psalm, David proclaims that the LORD possesses an excellent name throughout the earth, with His majesty established above the heavens (Psalm 8:1). The psalmist then contemplates why, in light of the works of God’s hands, He is mindful of humanity (Psalm 8:3–4).

Paul cites Psalm 8:4–6 in Hebrews 2:6–8 and applies the passage to Jesus. According to Hebrews 2:9, Jesus was made a little lower than the angels, endured death, and was subsequently crowned with glory and honor. This occurred because it was fitting for Him, through whom and by whom all things exist, to lead many sons to glory as the captain of their salvation (Hebrews 2:10).

Human beings occupy a position slightly lower than the angels within the order of creation, yet are elevated above animals. While God did not extend assistance to fallen angels, He provided aid to the descendants of Abraham (Hebrews 2:16). Consequently, God the Son assumed human form, becoming like His brethren in order to serve as a merciful and faithful High Priest in matters pertaining to God, making a satisfaction for the sins of the people (Hebrews 2:17). Therefore, through Christ’s death on behalf of our sins and His resurrection three days later, God offers assistance to those who believe (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).

The mind arises from the immaterial aspects of a person, facilitating a balance between emotions and reason to coordinate the attributes of the soul and spirit for individual well-being in all circumstances. It represents an aspect of intelligence and consciousness, manifested through combinations of thoughts, perceptions, memories, emotions, imagination, desires, and determinations unique to each individual. As the locus of understanding and comprehension, the mind produces the conclusions that individuals reach (1 Corinthians 14:14).

A key aspect of salvation is the acquisition of a renewed mind, enabling individuals to discern the will of God (Romans 12:2). Because the believer is in Christ and Christ is in the believer, the individual possesses a measure of the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Prior to salvation, individuals operated in the futility of their minds, with their mental processes darkened due to alienation from the life of God (Ephesians 4:17–18). The mind processes thoughts, desires, imagination, and perceptions, and from these processes, conclusions are formed.

Mental processes can be logical and precise, yet still yield incorrect conclusions. This occurs because the mind, when separated from God, is unable to discern spiritual matters, which are intrinsically linked to truth. Such cognitive errors are evident among scientists and astrophysicists who, despite acknowledging the limits of human knowledge regarding the universe, assert the nonexistence of God. This stance contradicts their epistemological standards in other domains. Knowledge should be evaluated based on established facts rather than hypotheses aligned with personal desires. When Christians focus on material concerns, they operate from the soul rather than the spirit, mirroring the mindset of unbelievers (1 Corinthians 2:14). This orientation precludes the reception of spiritual truths.

There are individuals of considerable intelligence among the unsaved; however, due to the influence of Satan, their minds are blinded to the truth (2 Corinthians 4:4). Such individuals may infiltrate local assemblies, presenting themselves as esteemed teachers while introducing destructive heresies (2 Peter 2:1). The alteration of the gospel is a prominent manifestation of this spiritual blindness. The core tenet of Christianity is the death of Christ for humanity’s sins and His resurrection, which forms the foundation of the Christian faith. Those who are blind to the gospel’s light promote alternative doctrines (2 Corinthians 11:4; Galatians 1:6), asserting that faith in the gospel alone is insufficient and that additional actions are required, such as repentance defined as remorse for past deeds or making Jesus the Lord of one’s life. Such conclusions do not align with scriptural teachings. Salvation is by grace through faith; grace is the disposition by which God bestows benefits without regard to merit, and faith is the foundation for hope in God’s promises. Therefore, salvation cannot be attained through works or personal merit, including remorse, acceptance, confession, or lordship commitments. These alternative gospels emphasize human effort rather than reliance on God’s grace and faith in His Word. Despite this, such teachings are prevalent in contemporary Christian assemblies, often due to leaders who themselves lack genuine Christian faith and remain blinded in their conclusions.

Believers are cautioned not to remain unaware of the conclusions originating from Satan’s mind (2 Corinthians 2:11). Through cunning, Satan thoroughly deceived Eve, and similarly, his ministers, masquerading as agents of righteousness, distort the conclusions of the mind regarding the simplicity of the Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3). They proclaim another Jesus, receive a different spirit, and advocate a different gospel (2 Corinthians 11:4). Because their minds are blinded to the truth of the gospel, they alter it to align with Satan’s methods, which promote independence from God.

Since the Christian’s weapons of warfare are not physical, they possess the capacity to dismantle mental strongholds that oppose the knowledge of God. These spiritual weapons enable every conclusion of the mind to be brought into obedience to the Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).

The mind’s conclusions result from intelligence and consciousness, expressed through unique combinations of thoughts, perceptions, memories, emotions, imagination, desires, and determinations. As individuals embody their identity in Christ, their conclusions are brought into obedience to Him, and the peace of God safeguards these conclusions, facilitating a proper understanding of truth.

Satan seeks to incite anxiety to undermine the mindset of believers and manipulate them into acting independently from God. The Devil’s objective is to divide the minds of believers, thereby distracting them from their identity in Christ. Since he employs circumstances and individuals to provoke anxiety, believers are instructed to put on the full armor of God to prevent giving Satan an opportunity (Ephesians 6:10–18). Satan is portrayed as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). Through this roar, he intends to instill anxiety and fear. Therefore, believers are encouraged to cast their anxiety upon God, who provides strength through His Son, enabling them to stand firm against Satan by donning the full armor of God when anxiety arises (1 Peter 5:7).

Woe to them, because they go in the way of Cain, and pour out themselves in the error of Balaam for profit, and in the verbal contradiction of Korah they perish (Jude 11).

The trajectory of those who have infiltrated the Church, turning the grace of God into licentiousness, rejecting authority, and maligning dignitaries, leads to destruction. Cain, who followed Satan, exemplified malignant evil in his actions (1 John 3:12). His offering, rooted in the works of his own hands, was designed to influence others to adopt his approach—a methodology that seeks justification before God through human effort. Similarly, many contemporary false teachers misuse passages from the Sermon on the Mount, the Psalms, and Proverbs to persuade Christians to pursue righteousness based on personal works.

False teachers also emulate Balaam, who pursued unrighteous gain and was willing to compromise his integrity for financial reward, offering his services to Balak (2 Peter 2:15). Such doctrines have afflicted the Church since its early history (Revelation 2:14). Some teachers exploit their congregants to acquire wealth and prestige with local authorities or to secure loans, thereby imposing financial burdens on their assemblies under the pretense of advancing the kingdom of God. This behavior is not limited to teachers; many leaders within the assemblies adopt similar practices. They employ secular methodologies, popular teachings, and commercialize religious instruction to profit from attendees.

Just as Korah perished for opposing Moses, these individuals also bring destruction upon themselves by speaking against God’s appointed ministers (Numbers 16:23; 2 Corinthians 11:15). They adopt worldly wisdom, prioritizing the appeal of faith to unbelievers while distorting the truth (Romans 1:25; Colossians 2:20–23). Their teachings and methods result in spiritual ruin for many Christians who follow them (1 Corinthians 10:9; 2 John 8). By employing Christian terminology, imagery, and clichés, they deceive the unsuspecting while serving their own interests (Romans 16:18). Those ensnared by their influence fail to achieve maturity in their Christian lives (2 Timothy 3:7).

Jude emphasizes that contemporary times are perilous, not due to war or conflict, but because individuals are self-centered, materialistic, boastful regarding their status and followers, lacking in love, arrogant, and more devoted to pleasure than to God (2 Timothy 3:1–4). The Church is therefore urged to heed Paul’s warning and distance itself from such individuals.

Bear one another’s burdens and thus fulfill the law of the Christ (Galatians 6:2).

As members of one body, those of the Church are called to bear one another’s burdens. The term “bearing” implies a sustained effort, rather than a temporary act of assistance. Those who are stronger in the faith are expected to support those who are weaker. This responsibility may require relinquishing certain personal freedoms for the benefit of individuals who do not fully understand the liberty found in Christ and who may base their sense of righteousness on dietary practices or the observance of specific days (Romans 15:1). The primary concern is to avoid causing a weaker believer to act against his conscience, which would result in sin if his actions are not motivated by faith (Romans 14:23). The kingdom of God is characterized not by food and drink, but by righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). Therefore, caring for fellow believers should not be neglected, even if it requires personal sacrifice.

Burdens may include restrictions, regulations, or obligations that place a significant weight on individuals. The council in Acts 15 determined that Gentile believers should not be subjected to the full burden of the Mosaic law, except for abstaining from food offered to idols, blood, things strangled, and fornication (Acts 15:28–29). However, not all burdens are inherently negative. The Church was obligated to provide for the apostles, just as contemporary congregations are responsible for supporting their pastors (1 Thessalonians 2:6). A pastor who genuinely bears the burdens of others will not insist on receiving support, prioritizing the well-being of the congregation. Such a pastor will refrain from teaching tithing, as it is associated with the law and may impose an undue obligation on believers. Instead, giving should be voluntary and cheerful, as the Lord values a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The law of Christ is fulfilled when believers bear one another’s burdens. As members of a single body, the Church is called to mutual care and support. This love is characterized by seeking the best for fellow believers, even to the extent of self-sacrifice. When individuals are secure in their identity in Christ and embrace the new nature, they will obey the commandments to believe in Jesus, love one another, and abide in Christ (1 John 3:23–24).

Bearing one another’s burdens involves a willingness to relinquish personal liberties in order to support those who are weaker in faith. For example, a pastor who does not require his congregation to give before meeting their own needs, and who allows them to determine their contributions freely, exemplifies this principle. Such a pastor may choose to take on additional employment rather than impose a financial burden on others. Conversely, members of the congregation who are able to support the pastor should not expect him to seek outside employment simply to avoid fulfilling their responsibility to provide for his needs.
