This weeks Topic is: Working Through Hard Feelings
It's already becoming a theme on this show that emotions while you are at summer camp are strong. Until now on the podcast we have mostly touched on happy things, like friendship and music. Today we are going to shift to something a bit different. We want to talk about working through hard feelings at camp. Unlike what summer camps often publicize in their promotional materials, our campers' summer experiences are not all about smiles, swimming, song sessions and fun under the sun. The camp community is a microcosm of the world. Campers can be sad, they feel homesick, they argue with their friends and for many of us summer camp professionals this can be where real growth at camp happens. The camp experience isn’t always easy, but being hard doesn’t necessarily mean bad. We’re going to talk about dealing with hard feelings at camp, and how that impacts both campers and their parents. Today we’ll be talking to a camper, Sophia, as well as our specialist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Bette Alkazian

This weeks Topic is Music!
Not all summer camps have a lake, every summer camp doesn't have horseback riding, not all summer camps have a ropes course, but we would venture to guess that ALL summer camps have music and songs. In many ways music is the language of summer camp. We have wake up songs, we have before breakfast songs, we have music during breakfast, we have after breakfast songs, we have walking from activity to activity songs...you get the point, we have music for every single moment at camp.
The joyful intensity of a summer camp song session would easily rival that of Beyonce at Coachella!
As we discussed in our previous episode about friendship, some of the strongest and most powerful relationships in our lives happen at camp, and music is one of the ways we share those feelings. How often in our real lives do we get to belt out all 8 Mins and 45 seconds of American Pie at full volume with our arms around our best friends? Where else is it ok to ugly cry with 300 people while you sing Leaving On A Jet Plane at closing campfire on the last night of camp. This week we want to ask why music is so powerful at camp and what lessons camp we take back with us into the real world.

This week’s topic is Friendship!
We are going to discuss the thing we love most about camp, Friendships! The friendships we create at camp are some of the strongest and most intense relationships we have. Our “camp friends" are different from our normal friends, in ways that are often difficult to explain.
Camp friends have always had to find ways to stay in touch throughout the year in between their time at camp, yet their friendships are often some of the strongest, even without physically being together.
This week, we’ll be talking to campers and our specialist Jackie Pepper, who’s a long time camper, staff member and lover of all things camp to try and figure out what is about camp friendships that make them so special, and how we can apply that to our current reality.
