Britain is in a deep crisis. The economy has declined and living conditions are deteriorating. The political landscape has polarized to the right and left as voters look for solutions outside the establishment parties. Canada's future can be seen in Britain.

This week, Joel is joined by Ben Curry of the International Secretariat of the Revolutionary Communist International to discuss the crisis in Britain and what Canadian revolutionaries can learn to prepare for similar developments in Canada.

Separatist sentiment is rapidly growing in Alberta. Over 300,000 people signed a petition for an independence referendum. Although a judge rejected this, anger has only grown, making a referendum on separation more likely. 
This week on the Class Line, Joel is joined by Laine Sheldon Houle to discuss the desire to separate from Canada and the position communists take towards the Alberta separatist movement. Note: This podcast was filmed on Tuesday May 19th, before Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced the referendum on May 21st.

First raised by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the idea also became a centerpiece of newly elected NDP leader Avi Lewis’ program - and the Toronto City Council has also voted in favour of a plan to create public grocery stores.
But will this work?

The NDP government of British Columbia has betrayed Indigenous people. Bending to pressure from mining companies, British Columbia Premier David Eby wants to change the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA).

This proves what Communists have always explained: there can be no reconciliation under capitalism.

The ruling class is on a collision course with indigenous rights. After more than a decade of Liberal reconciliation policies, the economic needs of the system—to fast-track oil and gas development and critical mineral extraction—are running headlong into Indigenous rights.

We are witnessing the biggest militarization drive since WWII. The government, the media and the billionaires say this is necessary for “defence.” They all say this will create good jobs and kick start the economy. 

But this is a colossal waste of money - and they will make us pay for it. State finances are already strained, and governments across the country are implementing cuts to social services and conducting mass layoffs. And military spending, far from boosting the real economy, is a massive drain, throwing billions away that could be spent in the real economy.

The post secondary education system is mired in a deep crisis. Already, tens of thousands of staff have been laid off, hundreds of programs have been cut and entire campuses have been shut down affecting tens of thousands of students.
And now governments are moving to offload the cost of this crisis onto the backs of students by cutting funding, cutting grants and raising tuition.
The conclusion many are drawing is that the only way to stop this is with a student strike. A strike is set for Nova Scotia and a student strike movement is developing in Ontario. As more governments release their spring budgets, we can expect more cuts. The only way to stop this is by mobilizing the widest possible layers for a student strike.
But how can we build a student strike - and how can we win?
This week, Joel is joined by Marco La Grotta to discuss this question drawing from experience with the 2019 Ryerson student strike and the 2012 Quebec student strike.
