In the modern podcasting landscape, 25 episodes isn’t that much. But it has been a big accomplishment for me and our team.
On this episode of The Client Whisperer™ Show, I’m sharing 5 realizations I’ve learned by getting to this milestone.
Realization One.
Client success is so important.
I live this - but I am a victim of the curse of knowledge myself. A friend and client of ours, Dan Barret often says “we get fatigued from our message before our market does.”
Realization Two.
The temptation to overcomplicate is strong.
Listen. My vision is huge. This means I see things as they can be with all of the detail and glory that is involved. But when I’m starting out, it is important to keep it simple. This is where I’ve given up at podcasting before. This time, my only responsibility was to show up and record every week, slowly adding in new components over time.
Realization Three.
Systems are critical.
When I was starting I actually did everything myself. I wanted to learn the ins and outs and from recording my own audiobook years ago, I had all of the equipment and audio editing expertise necessary to make it happen. After a few though, I got tired of doing all of the tedious parts. In fact, editing the interviews was downright painful for me. So we created clear procedures and now my team is up and running to make everything work. All I need to do is record the episodes and hand off the recording and show notes and I know they’ll take care of the rest.
Realization Four.
Preparation is everything.
As we record this, I actually have 20 more episode topics identified, and 12 more episodes completely recorded. I’ve found that I need time to let topics percolate in my mind. Because of this, we have monthly content planning meetings where we take data of what content has resonated in the past and what we’re hearing that our tribe needs. Then I go to work outlining so by the time I’m ready to record I have a few episodes all ready to go. It is the only way we can do multiple episodes a week and stay sane.
Realization Five.
Perfection is a distraction.
I’m a recovering perfectionist. For me, part of that grand vision comes an awareness of what is possible. And when I compare what is against my vision it is easy to get depressed. Instead, I try to ignore the comparisons altogether and focus on making valuable content and continuing to make a difference in our clients’ businesses and lives. When I do compare, I make sure to do it backward. How did what we made this week compare to last week, last month, or last year.
