  • EP67-BIO-GAS Renewable alternative to CNG. Compressed Bio Gas (CBG)- The Fuel of the Future- Scientists CSIR IIP

Biogas is rapidly gaining importance in India's renewable energy basket as it has a favourable CO2 footprint. Biogas is formed by biological transformation of large variety of organic wastes. It primarily consists of Methane (CH4) : (55-65%) ; Carbon Dioxide (CO2) : (35-45%) ; Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) : (0-3%); Moisture (Saturated).

Biogas offers multi-prolonged benefits to society like-
    1. Extraction of value from waste.
    2. Reduction of imported fossil fuel
    3. Safe and responsible disposal of bio-waste
    4. Suitable for distribution as well as industrial scale production
    5. Can tackle variety of municipal and industrial waste
    6. Employment Generation.
However, the biogas needs to be up-graded (purified) to remove undesired components like CO2, H2S and moisture in order to-
    1. Enhance the calorific value of biogas to natural gas equivalent.
    2. To avoid corrosion in pipeline/burners/engines handling the biogas
    3. To make it suitable to be used as Compressed Biogas (CBG) which is hailed as an alternative vehicular fuel of the future or as PNG equivalent fuel for domestic and industrial use.
Through Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme Government of India has envisioned establishment of 5000 CBG plants by 2023.

" India’s trucking market is expected to grow over 4x by 2050 — fueling the nation’s economy and transportation emissions. India is the world’s fifth-largest economy, with a GDP close to US$3 trillion and growing.
The freight transportation sector is growing rapidly to ensure more goods and products reach a rising number of end consumers. Currently, India transports ~4.6 billion tonnes of freight annually, generating transport demand of 2.2 trillion tonne-kilometres (tonne-km) at the cost of ₹9.5 lakh crore.2 Demand for goods is rising with urbanisation, population increase, the rise of e-commerce, and rising income levels. As this demand continues to grow, associated road freight movement is expected to increase to 9.6 trillion tonne-km by 2050. Road transport (i.e., trucks) carries the bulk of India’s goods, 70% of today’s domestic freight demand. Heavy- and medium-duty trucks are responsible for most of that road transportation. And as road freight travel continues to grow, the number of trucks is expected to more than quadruple, from 4 million in 2022 to roughly 17 million trucks by 2050.
In light of these market trends, zero-emissions trucks — including battery electric trucks and fuel cell electric trucks — offer a compelling alternative to the diesel trucks that dominate India’s road freight today. ZETs do not have tailpipe emissions and have lower operating costs, presenting an opportunity for India to showcase how the adoption of ZETs is economically efficient and better for air quality, public health, and environment."

  • EP63-Capture of CARBON DIOXIDE and its conversion to CHEMICALS and FUELS- effective for CO2 mitigation- Scientist, CSIR IIP

C02 is a greenhouse gas and its concentration in the air is increasing continuously causing Global Warming. The capture of C02 and its conversion to chemicals and fuels is recognised as one of the most effective option for CO2 mitigation. They are using carbon dioxide as a carbon resource. Converting carbon dioxide to value added chemicals.
With their process, they have been able to replaced carbon monoxide used in acetic acid production with carbon dioxide and converting it into acetic acid. Carbon Dioxide is an extremely stable molecule, its activation requires a lot of energy, however in their approach they are activating carbon dioxide under ambient conditions like room temperature and atmospheric pressure. using sunlight. The entire process not only has a positive environment impact but also provides a huge economic benefit.
Methanol + Carbon Dioxide ➡️ Acetic Acid
Acetic acid is an important component from polymer chemistry to pharmaceutical industry. It is used as an antiseptic against pseudomonas, enterococci, streptococci, staphylococci and others. As a liquid it is used to flush the bladder in those who have a urinary catheter in an attempt to prevent infection or blockage. It may be used to adjust the pH of the vagina. It is also applied to the cervix to help detect cervical cancer during screening.
