“Remember when we all used to pretend to be professionals? Oh how COVID changed the way we present ourselves”

There was, up until the beginning of the pandemic, a noticeably clear distinction between work and personal life. Around about the time that we were all forced to work from home was when there started to be a change. 

It allowed us to drop the professional façade and to some extent merge our professional and personal selves. 

There have been a number of downsides though.

For those who are working at home most of the time, the distinction between work and personal time has blurred, such that the ability to switch off has dissolved. Lots of people no longer get the commute to wind down and switch off. It's almost as though switching off is a skill that has to be practiced.

If you're hiring or thinking about hiring, you're likely going through the motions of deciding whether your requirement is contract, perm or fixed term.

Each option presents advantages and disadvantages. But there is one option that definitively puts you on the back foot. That being, fixed term.

In our recent talent survey, only 3% of the project services community said that they would consider a fixed term contract. The reason, for the most part, is that a fixed term arrangement offers neither the security of a perm role, nor the financial advantage of a day rate contract. In essence, it's the worst of both worlds.

By going to the market with a fixed term role, you are narrowing the pool of available talent down to 3%, which, in this market, makes it incredibly difficult for you.

Of course, you might not always have unlimited budget or even the headcount to hire someone on a day rate or perm basis. So, what should you do? There is no simple solution. We discuss your options today with our guest, Jill Ryder, Founder of Precision Sourcing.

There are many ways to find your next role. Direct applications, meet-ups, networking events, recruitment agencies, and, for those so inclined, the good old newspaper.

But there is a tool that you should keep in your arsenal that is super effective and only requires 5 minutes of your time each day.

LinkedIn. 

I know it seems obvious. LinkedIn has long been a platform used to identify employment opportunities. But have you really given it a good nudge? I mean outside of applying for jobs through it?

You should start. The effect it can have on your chances of securing your dream role are immeasurable.
