The announcment of Mr Tan Chee Wee's promotion as "SAF's first inspector-general to oversee Singapore's pre-school sector" was met with much bemusement by the public who began conjuring memes about the "army-style" discipline that the children would be subjected to. 

Naturally, the question arose as to whether it was justified to promote an army general to a sector he had little experience in.

In this National Day exclusive, take a trip down memory lane to 1966, the first year of Singapore's independence.
