In The Cold Open Podcast #17, The End of Summer Odds & Ends Edition, Matt Reynolds and Robert Sickels talk about a little bit of everything. First, we discuss how having children has ruined our love of summer and that somehow leads to a breakdown of The Rock and Robert’s undying adoration of bad movies (Roadhouse, Point Break, etc.). Along the way we note how we deal with theater disruptions, a digression that’s highlighted by Matt telling the tale of his epic clash with a cell phone user during a screening of Children of Men. We also run down some summer movies, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Into the Storm, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Lucy, Under the Skin, Chef, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. We then discuss PS3/4 games including L.A. Noire, Grand Theft Auto, inFAMOUS Second Son, the BioShock and Uncharted series, and The Last of Us. Finally, spurred on by our consideration of depictions of post apocalyptic landscapes in video games, we touch on summer TV, specifically HBO’s The Leftovers, Cinemax’s The Knick, and Showtime’s Masters of Sex. Our outro this week is The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb,” which also underscores the most memorable shot in Guardians of the Galaxy.
