As a startup competing for a finite pool of venture monies, it behooves the team to use all tools available at its disposal to give them an edge. So it makes total sense to build a working prototype. The problem is how do you build one? What is a working prototype? Is it throwaway code? Is it even code at all? What should it do and not do? How much should a startup be willing to invest in a prototype? How long should it take to build and how much effort should be invested?

1 the entrepreneur blames the investors for "not getting it"

2. the entrepreneur pivots.

As originally coined by Eric Ries: "Pivot" - used to describe smart startups that change direction quickly, but stay grounded in what they’ve learned. They keep one foot in the past and place one foot in a new possible future. Over time, this pivoting may lead them a bit away from their original vision, but not away from the common principles that link each step.

Mature businesses also pivot to maintain or regain a competitive advantage.
