Adelaide-based physiotherapist Karleen Scott joins TPC's Tristan White and Jess Soding to discuss her varied professional career as well as her day-to-day work at The Physio Co.
Karleen has been at TPC for nearly seven years; aside from her work as a practitioner, Karleen is also a team leader for TPC members in both Adelaide and Sydney.
In this chat with Tristan and Jess, Karleen discusses:
- the sense of connection TPC has built among its remote-working community physios
- winning TPC's MVP award in 2021 for living the company's core values
- how she often feels part of her clients' families because of the close relationship she has with them
- what's involved in working as a community physio.
Karleen tells the story of her client Helen, who has some physical issues but is active on the computer and likes to regularly keep Karleen up-to-date by messaging her. Helen had difficulty in moving on or off, as well as up and down, in her bed; Karleen worked with her to improve that situation.
Karleen also tells the story of another client, who is 95 and vision-impaired; on the client's birthday, she and Karleen walked a kilometre to the local McDonald's for coffee and a muffin. Not only did they have fun celebrating the client's birthday, but they also spent time working towards her goal-based program.
Karleen says that as a community physio, you have to be okay with working by yourself, but there is always support there if you need it.
She also discussed the practicalities of working with older people.
You need to have an open mind: "Be prepared for lots of changes (in clients)," she says
