The Construction Veteran Podcast

What if I told you that the essential factor in the construction industry isn't the finished building, but the safety of the people who build it? Tune in as I, Scott Friend, passionately advocate for a reimagined perspective on safety – where it's not an obligation, but a personal commitment to make sure that everyone goes home just as they came in. This episode, recorded during Safety Week 2023, is an urgent call to prioritize safety measures every single day, not just for a week.

Beyond my personal passion, I also shed light on the critical role of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in upholding safety standards and the grave consequences of ignoring them. I take the liberty to dispel some common misconceptions about safety in the industry and argue why veterans could make a significant career in construction safety. So, if you're a safety person or know someone who is, join us to resonate with this cause and share your story. Remember, safety is not just about rules, it's about life. Let's make sure everyone gets to enjoy it to the fullest.

Do you ever feel like you're chasing a paycheck instead of a fulfilling career? If so, our conversation with Air Force veteran and Chairman of the One Tribe Foundation, Dan Lombardo, might provide a fresh perspective. We discuss Dan's extraordinary journey from experiencing a tragic accident during his service, learning to cope, and ultimately transitioning into the construction industry. Our chat with Dan gives an in-depth look into the construction industry, highlighting the urgent need for versatile tradespeople. We uncover why it's essential to focus on extending our knowledge and skills rather than solely pursuing financial gain. We deliberate on the importance of investing in workplaces that foster professional growth and maintain a positive work environment. Furthermore, we shed light on the vital role mentorship plays within the industry and the unique skills veterans can contribute.

In a poignant part of our discussion, we dive into the work of the One Tribe Foundation and its subsidiary programs, focusing on mental health support for veterans. We underscore how a strong sense of community can be a powerful tool in preventing suicide, and how EMDR therapy aids veterans in managing PTSD.
