America was founded by Puritans. That Puritan spirit has remained a guiding spirit of American culture and society even today. In the early years, many Christian Puritans were looking for witches to burn at the stake. This is still happening today. What is different in modern times is, while we have lost the spirit of Christianity, broadly speaking, Puritanism is still there, only now fueled by a secular religion.
