This is a special bonus episode of The Shift Foundation's podcast, The Conversation Collective. Shift teamies Tiki and Greer jump on the mics to kōrero with the new CEO of Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa, Raelene Castle.
At Shift we are big believers in the positive benefits that being active has on wellbeing, so we were excited to check in with the new CEO, hear her thoughts on physical activity, and kōrero some of the issues and opportunities that Shift is super passionate about!
Raelene Castle has worked both in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia as a high profile sport executive. Her appointment at Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa marks the first time that a woman has held this top position at the organisation. Beyond her career in sport administration Raelene has played tennis, netball and lawn bowls at a representative level and is a self-proclaimed lover of sport.

During the episode we mentioned the IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion held in Rotorua in 2019. Reading the legacy document "Waiora - Indigenous Peoples' Statement for Planetary Health and Sustainable Development" helped us to better our understanding of the interconnectedness between human health and wellbeing, climate change, and planetary health. We would like to acknowledge the authors of this statement and the importance of Indigenous peoples' voices on these topics.

Welcome back. Join Solinda, your amazing host for this week's episode, as she speaks with her guest Hayam Elshirbiny from Egypt. They kōrero about jumping into life's opportunities, creating inclusive spaces for young women to play basketball in Cairo, and the wellbeing benefits of keeping active in a way that suits you.
Hayam is an incredible woman from Cairo, Egypt who is dedicated to empowering young girls in her city by teaching them to play basketball. Since 2014 she has been doing this through her programme Girl Power. A retired professional basketball player herself, Hayam played basketball for 20 years and represented Egypt on a national level. She has served on the governing committee for the sport and supervised several basketball teams. These days Hayam can be found training for ultramarathons and is now a founding member of Egypt's first trail running team, Wadi Ibex.

Sangeetha is the founder and director of PlayNice Company in Chennai, India. With her company Sangeetha provides opportunities for change and growth through mental and physical fitness. Sangeetha is an amazing ultimate frisbee player and coach, and has competed at the World Championships of Beach Ultimate several times. Ultimate frisbee is a mixed gender, self-officiated sport, two things which Sangeetha believes make it a valuable tool for empowerment in Indian society.

The young woman hosting this week's episode is the fabulous Caitlin! Join Caitlin for a thoughtful and fun kōrero with her enigmatic guest Carmen "Piña" Pozo from Bolivia. Together they delve into the implications of gender within journalism and sport, discuss success in male dominated industries, and consider how media and sport can be tools for social change in Bolivia and beyond.

Piña is a sport journalist in La Paz, Bolivia. She co-founder of a sports magazine and a soccer academy for girls, both called Las Súper Poderosas ("Super powerful women"). As one of the first and most recognised female sports journalist in Bolivia, Piña made waves at the start of her career in the 1990s. Today she continues to break down gender stereotypes in sport, especially in soccer. During the pandemic Las Súper Poderosas soccer academy has been training girls online and while also working to enable those without internet access to participate.

This week your incredible host Jolénna is chatting with Megha Vora and her daughter Jaanya from India. In this engaging conversation they speak about developing resilience, the importance of independence for women in India, and empowerment through self-defence.
Megha and her husband established Women's Set Defense Centre (WSDC) which women can attend for free. Since 2014 they have set up six training centres around India. Megha herself is the chief instructor at the main centre in Mumbai where she lives. Their basic course includes physical training, confidence exercises, and preventive training like screaming and verbal de-escalation. Since the pandemic hit India Megha has been teaching classes to thousands of girls and women online.

For this week's episode, the amazing Kate is hosting Carole Ponchon from France. They chat about empowerment, diversity in leadership, and the ways in which COVID-19 has impacted the fight for equity.
Carole is currently leading SWinG (Supporting Women in Achieving their Goals) a project that aims to increase diversity in leadership and governance. She has worked as a leader and manager in several European sports organisations and in 2013 founded her own company, BeInnovActiv. She is passionate about the positive impact that play and physical activity can have on people's lives.

For the first official interview of series two, we're starting things off in Aotearoa, New Zealand! This week, the charming Eleanor sits down with her guest Shanelle Barrett. Together they yarn about the power of positive thinking, family support, and how all that makes entry into sport more accessible.

Shanelle Barrett is an event director who runs the New Plymouth ITU Triathlon World Cup. After a debilitating illness prevented Shanelle from competing as a triathlete in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, she had to rethink her whole sense of identity. In 2012 she did achieve her ultimate goal of making it to the Olympic Games, this time as a technical official for triathlon.
