The emergence last week of a racist photo on a 1984 yearbook page for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam — with one man in blackface and another in a KKK robe — may force him to resign.
So we reached out to someone who’s been talking about this in his classroom at San Diego State University, African Studies professor Ajani Brown. Before we reached out to him, he had already discussed the Virginia stories with his students and before the Virgina stories even broke, he had already covered the use of blackface in his classroom.
In our discussion with Brown, we talked about the history of blackface, the impact these photos can have on a community and the state of black art and imagery in 2019 when this year’s Oscar contenders include Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk, Black Klansman and Black Panther.
