Should one person lead an entire church or does Scripture show us a different model?

In this episode of The Counseling Couple, Alexander and Petra Rojas sit down with Jared Santiago to explore biblical church leadership and the Fivefold Ministry found in Ephesians 4:11–16.

Jesus gave the Church apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to equip the saints and build up the Body of Christ. But what happens when church leadership becomes centered around one person or when one ministry gift dominates while the others are never developed?

We discuss the role of each of the fivefold ministry gifts, the relationship between elders and ministry leaders, and why healthy leadership requires humility, accountability, submission, communication, and character.

We also tackle an important issue: giftedness does not automatically equal maturity. A leader can be incredibly gifted while still needing significant growth in character. Healthy churches shouldn't simply recognize gifts—they should develop people.

Are We Doing Church Leadership Wrong?

What does biblical church leadership actually look like? And have we allowed the world’s model of leadership to influence the Church more than Jesus has?

In this episode, we go deep into 2 Corinthians and one of the most painful moments in Paul’s ministry. The church he helped build began questioning his leadership while turning toward leaders who appeared more impressive, charismatic, and powerful.

It raises an important question for the Church today:

Are we choosing leaders because of their character or their charisma?

We talk about Paul and the “super-apostles,” servant leadership vs. positional leadership, spiritual authority, church hurt, unhealthy leadership, giving and tithing, and Jesus’ radical definition of greatness in Matthew 20:20–28.

We also share something we’ve never publicly talked about before: our own experience leading a church in Australia, the painful rejection we experienced from other leaders, and the healing that followed.

That season changed the way we see leadership.

Jesus said, “Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” — Matthew 20:26

Biblical leadership isn’t about getting people to recognize your title or position. It’s about becoming low enough to serve the people God has entrusted to you.

Because sometimes the leaders who look the most impressive aren't necessarily the leaders who look the most like Jesus.
