Some of the most life-changing people show up when we step into new rooms. That’s how I met Nancy Moore an entrepreneur, podcaster, and community builder helping women design businesses and lives rooted in passion and purpose.
Nancy’s story is a beautiful mirror for so many of us: she chose “secure” first (accounting at E&Y), discovered it didn’t light her up, and let an unexpected layoff become an invitation. From staffing and coaching talent to 24 years of teaching, to launching the Sharing Passion and Purpose podcast and live, in-person events in Tulsa, Nancy didn’t chase perfection she kept taking the next aligned step. Her work centers on a simple, powerful truth: when your choices line up with your values, energy follows. You don’t have to burn it all down; you just have to get honest about what actually brings you alive.
Introduce yourself to the person you admire, raise your hand, test a small offer, or walk into a room that stretches you. Nancy calls it stepping into your boldness not because fear disappears, but because you move anyway. And here’s the gift: when you say yes to what fuels you, your life becomes more abundant more joy, clarity, and momentum and the people around you feel that permission too.
So if you’re stuck in “fine,” consider this your nudge. Get quiet. Name your values. Take one step that aligns with them today. You don’t need a ten-year plan you need one honest action. Boldness isn’t loud; it’s aligned. And alignment is how we build lives we’re genuinely excited to wake up for.

This past week reminded me that courage doesn’t always roar it sometimes sits in an airport crying, whispering, “I don’t understand, but I’ll keep going.” Missing my flight felt like failure in motion. I had everything planned flights booked, conferences lined up, meaningful interviews scheduled and then, in one unexpected moment, it all fell apart. But as I sat there in that airport, what hurt most wasn’t the inconvenience. It was the echo of an old story the one that says, you’ve messed up again. That familiar voice that questions your worth every time something doesn’t go as planned. I thought I had outgrown that voice, but it came back, reminding me that healing often circles back not to punish, but to deepen the lesson.
Later that same week, my daughter was in a car accident. She was safe, thank God, but when we learned her truck wasn’t fully insured, the tears came again. The same voice whispered: You should’ve checked. You failed. But sitting with it, I realized something powerful these moments weren’t punishment, they were invitations. Invitations to stop attaching my worth to perfection, performance, or control. To stop equating mistakes with failure. To see that my value doesn’t fluctuate with circumstance. Sometimes, God lets the plans unravel to show us that the mission isn’t just in the doing it’s in the being.
So maybe courage isn’t having all the right notes it’s choosing to keep humming when you’ve forgotten the words. To show up, still soft, still hopeful, still learning. The missed flights, the miscommunications, the broken plans they don’t define who we are. The heart behind how we move through them does. Grace allows us to hum through the unknown, trusting that one day the words will come. And until they do, we keep showing up imperfect, growing, and always, always enough.

If you’ve ever wondered what courage looks like in real life, it isn’t a headline; it’s the rhythm of chores at dusk, tiny hands that miss their dad after a video call, and a mom who keeps choosing the next best step. Sadie reminds us that hope isn’t the absence of hard, it’s the decision to see beauty in the middle of it and to keep moving anyway.
What stood out most in our conversation was how faith + practical tools hold hands. On the faith side, Sadie listens to the Bible on audio during the margins and lets it shape her perspective; on the practical side, she chooses one step at a time breathe, feed the boys, mow the lawn, call a friend, plan one month of goals. She trusts her God-given intuition (that gut nudge) and says yes to rooms that stretch her because proximity to courageous people builds courageous lives. If you’re stretched thin today, start there close your eyes, breathe, ask what this season is teaching you, and then pick one aligned action. Courage compounds in small, honest choices.

Fear is one of those companions we all carry sometimes quietly, sometimes loudly. What struck me in reflecting on my own journey is how often I’ve mistaken comfort for courage. People look at the big moves 13 years of foster care, selling everything and moving to Montana, launching a nonprofit and say, “Wow, you’re so brave.” And yet, many of those choices didn’t scare me. They were hard, yes, but they still sat in my comfort zone because I knew my capacity. The real fear showed up in unexpected places being seen, letting go of perfection, or even entertaining the dream of leaping out of a plane.
That’s the thing about fear: it disguises itself as safety, but really it’s resistance. It’s the heaviness in our chest when we want something but convince ourselves it’s impossible. Fear asks us to stay small, but growth asks us to get curious. Sometimes that means going backwards before we can go forward revisiting an old belief, an unhealed place, or a story that shaped how we define “safe.” Because when we finally face the fear we’ve been avoiding, we create the space for new possibilities to unfold.
So I’ll ask you what I’m asking myself: where is fear holding the pen in your story? And what step even a small one could you take to rewrite it? Maybe it’s asking the question you’ve been afraid to ask, showing up in a space you’ve been avoiding, or daring to imagine something different for your future. Courage isn’t the absence of fear it’s the decision to walk with it, hand in hand, toward the life you’re called to live.

Some truths don’t land softly: life doesn’t always get easier, but it can get better. Better happens when we practice hope like a verb. In my conversation with Lowell Hochhalter of The Lifeguard Group, we sat with this tension. Hope isn’t naïve sunshine; it’s the grit that keeps us moving when the road climbs. As a long-time foster mom, I’ve asked myself whether exposing my kids to hard stories dimmed their belief in people. Lowell reframed it: our family didn’t just witness brokenness we got to be the evidence that hope still shows up. That’s what courage looks like: a deliberate choice to act even while afraid.
And if we’re going to act, we can’t outsource vigilance. Nobody gets a free pass not the reverend, the coach, the neighbor, the app, or the video game. Handing a child a device without training is like handing them a weapon with no safety course. If your kids have time for the platforms, you have time to learn them too. Trust your gut (read The Gift of Fear if you haven’t); that inner guardian is a God-given early-warning system. Community is our counter-culture: knock on the door, learn your neighbors’ names, ask the awkward question. Two students in a town of 150 listened to that nudge, spoke up, and a trafficking ring was uncovered. Would you do it for one? They did and three lives were changed.
Hope also heals in unexpected places. At Lifeguard’s Crooked Tree Ranch, restoration looks like equine therapy, art, movement, and old-fashioned presence. I’ve watched a child with sensory overload melt against a horse’s steady breath; I’ve seen women rebuild dignity in a round pen where no words are required. That’s the quiet miracle of hope re-patterning nervous systems, rebuilding trust, one small win at a time. If your heart is stirring, take the next best step: review your home’s digital boundaries tonight, check in with a teacher or neighbor tomorrow, and support organizations closing the front door on exploitation. It won’t always be easy. But together one choice, one conversation, one brave “not in my town”—it will get better.

Whose story are you living the one the world handed you, or the one you’re here to write? Lately we’ve been unpacking how early beliefs become “truth,” and how easily we outsource our next step to noise: the perfect niche, the perfect avatar, the perfect strategy. Tools matter—books, coaches, conferences have shaped me but they are not my compass. Alignment is. When I try to force my business into someone else’s blueprint, I feel it immediately: heaviness, resistance, chaos. That’s my cue to pause and ask, What is my way? What is my why?
For me, that meant releasing the pressure to serve a single industry and, instead, serving value-based entrepreneurs—humans who build from their core values and crave clarity so they can live them fully. It also meant showing up online as a whole person (mom, wife, nonprofit leader, bookkeeper, coach) instead of corralling myself into separate boxes that don’t fit. Will this path be slower sometimes? Maybe. But it flows. And when it flows, I do my best work, attract the right clients, and stay consistent because it’s aligned, not forced.
If you’re feeling stuck, try this: turn down the noise and ask, What does success look and feel like for me? Where do I feel resistance, and what is it telling me? Then take one aligned step simple, specific, yours. The right way might just be your way. And when you honor that, the work gets lighter, the path gets clearer, and the results compound.

On this week’s episode of The Courage Coalition, I had the privilege of sitting down with Malik Mack serial entrepreneur, speaker, and now author of 101 Side Hustles, Small Businesses, and Income Streams A Guide to Your Financial Freedom. Malik shared how his entrepreneurial journey started in middle school, selling gum for a profit and learning the math of return on investment before he even knew what ROI was. That simple act of curiosity turned into a lifelong pursuit of creating opportunities and today, he’s helping others see that earning is an action anyone can take.
What struck me most in our conversation wasn’t just his practical wisdom around money and side hustles, but his perspective on mindset. Malik reminded us that so much of what holds us back is not a lack of opportunity, but the beliefs we’ve carried since childhood beliefs about money, success, or what’s “possible.” He calls us to unlearn what limits us and to replace it with intentionality. As he said, all growth happens when movement occurs. Courage, then, isn’t about waiting for the perfect outcome, it’s about taking that next best step even when the outcome is uncertain.
This is the heartbeat of the work I do, too: aligning our values with our actions so that our money, our work, and our legacy flow from who we really are. A side hustle may start as extra “vacation money,” but it can become the foundation of a life built on freedom and purpose. Malik’s reminder is powerful don’t get stuck in scarcity thinking. The world is big enough, the opportunities are real, and everything you need to move forward already exists inside of you.

Our beliefs shape the lens we see life through but many of them aren’t actually ours. They were placed on us when we were five, six, seven years old, as our little brains were still wiring. Words spoken, experiences endured, and cultural messages absorbed became “truths” that we rarely stop to question. Over time, those beliefs become so ingrained we no longer even recognize them as beliefs they simply feel like who we are. But here’s the gift: they can be changed. At every stage of life, new levels of growth ask us to revisit what we’ve accepted as true and decide if it still serves us.
The frustrating part is that revisiting old beliefs doesn’t happen just once. You can do the healing work, forgive, build new habits, and still feel the same lies resurface when you step into the next version of yourself. I experienced this in my own business journey. For years I believed setting boundaries meant losing clients, so I took on work that wasn’t aligned. When those clients left, I told myself the old story: you’re not good enough, you’re not smart enough. That belief dated back to childhood, but it tried to ride along every time I grew. The shift came when I realized I wasn’t just a transactional bookkeeper I’m a relational bookkeeper, and the clients who value that are the ones I want to serve. Letting go of the misaligned ones created a freedom that no paycheck could match.
The truth is, growth requires us to say hello to those old beliefs every time they appear and choose differently. It’s not about changing who we are it’s about growing into the next level of who we’ve always been. Whether in business, family, or personal dreams, we will keep being asked: What belief am I letting stop me? The courage comes in answering honestly, and then taking action anyway. Because nothing changes unless something changes.

Some stories punch the air out of the room. Amara’s did. She aged out of foster care, and for years the only people who truly knew her her siblings were scattered. The day she volunteered at a park serving breakfast to the homeless, she saw a face that looked familiar. It was her oldest brother. She was there to serve; he was there to be served. They cried, hugged, tried to make sense of a system that had separated them so completely they almost didn’t recognize one another. “Siblings are not optional,” Amara said. And she’s right. When a child has already lost so much, siblings are an anchor. Our system has to do better at keeping them connected.
Amara’s story pulls back the curtain on what “aging out” often looks like: instability, frequent school moves, temporary placements, and then on your 18th birthday sudden adulthood with all the choices and none of the tools. One in five youth who age out will experience homelessness. We can change that trajectory with practical, trauma-informed support: stable placements; consistent relationships (her CASA was a lifeline); deeper life-skills training that goes beyond the basics; and TBRI-style training for foster parents and for youth, so both understand the “why” behind big emotions and survival behaviors. Stability isn’t a luxury it’s the runway for a different future.
If you’ve ever wondered, “What can I do?”start here: become a CASA, advocate for sibling connections, fund or demand trauma-informed training in your county, hire and mentor aged-out youth, show up with time and presence. Amara defines courage as “facing the hardship with broad shoulders, head held high.” Let’s meet her there. The system may have forgotten too many kids but we don’t have to. Speak up. Get involved. Push for change. Foster youth are not case numbers; they’re our future, and they deserve more than survival.

This week on The Courage Coalition, we close out the BEAM process with the letter M—Mindset. Mindset is a circle it always brings us back to our beliefs and our values. Too often we attach our worth to numbers in the bank or benefits on paper and call that success. But true abundance isn’t just a dollar figure. Abundance is freedom of time, freedom of relationships, freedom of choice, and the courage to live aligned with your values. It’s the ability to change your mind and create a new story, no matter what chapter you find yourself in.
I’ve lived both sides. On paper, Chad and I had it all great jobs, six figures, retirement accounts, travel, the “successful” middle-class story. But the cost was stress, time away, and a life that didn’t feel like ours. Choosing to walk away and rebuild in Montana was messy and far from perfect. Yet that decision taught us the most powerful truth: abundance is a mindset. It’s not about waiting for the “perfect time.” It’s about giving yourself permission to live differently right now, in alignment with your core values. That is freedom. That is abundance.
When you shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance, you stop asking “What should I do?” and start asking “What do I want my life to mean?” You realize debt doesn’t define you, your retirement plan doesn’t own you, and someone else’s definition of success doesn’t have to be yours. Abundance is found in the daily choices to earn, spend, and save in a way that honors your story not someone else’s.
✨ Journal Prompt: Take 10 minutes today and answer this: What does abundance mean to me in time, in money, in relationships, and in freedom? Then ask yourself: Am I living in a way that reflects that definition—or am I chasing someone else’s version of success?
