Dr. Chris Mackie said the novel coronavirus pandemic, and changes within the health care system itself, have increased the amount of work to be done by a medical officer of health. That's one of the reasons why the Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) has decided to temporarily split the role of CEO and Medical Officer of Health.

Michael Clarke will serve as interim CEO, while Dr. Chris Mackie will remain the Medical Officer of Health. It is not clear when the situation at the MLHU will revert back to its former self.

The general contractor chosen to build a community centre in east London has been fired following months of delays and construction issues.

Jasper Construction won the $21.4 million contract in fall 2017. The East Lions Community Centre was set to open in fall 2019, but was pushed to early 2020 following issues. It has not yet opened.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) says the time has come to implement a mandatory mask policy — in certain, “specific circumstances” — in an effort to protect against the spread of the novel coronavirus.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, medical officer of health Dr. Chris Mackie announced masks will be required in higher-risk businesses where physical distancing is not practical, as well as on public transit.

Mackie noted that it was important to give people enough time to acquire masks, which is why the order doesn’t come into effect until Monday, July 20.

Ghislaine Maxwell, British socialite and longtime associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested in New Hampshire by the FBI on Thursday.

Maxwell, 58, was arrested on charges related to the investigation into Epstein’s alleged sexual abuse of young girls and women. She is set to appear in a federal court later Thursday
