This is the last part of the 4th section of The Century of Self. We conclude our discussion of how we have been manipulated by business and politicians.

Dick Morris was called in to save the Clinton Campaign in 1995. He set out to do "small bore" politics. To do life style focus group testing and to model Clinton's campaign on the desires of the people and not on creating a good government. Robert Reich refers tot the as the end of the progressive idea of makng people better and more responsible citizens. What emerged was making democracy nothing more that a collection of desires.

Whisical title, the song by the Stones captured the sprit of the eara. Artists are alway the first to catch the new ethos.   In this episode Regan and Thatcher are painted as placing the satisfaction of desires at the center of society. The program accuses Regan of making a lack of compassion as being respectable. The program will later accuse the left of similar bad attitudes.

By the 1990, it came to be believed that the satisfaction of desires and feeling was our highest priority. Then politics took over the techiniques from the advertisers. The only problem was that these techniques were not designed to set people free but to enslave them to their unconscious desires, and even fantasies.

In our show on Tuesday, our talk turned to the desire and what happens when God removes the desire to do something that could be harmful in our lives. Jay and I  will be discussing this on our show today.

We listen to part two of the 3rd hours of the BBC documentary on the Century of Self. From Fruedian suppression and control of dangerous emtions, there was a rebellion which led to the idea of letting out emotions.  We will listen and discuss the audio.

By the 1960's people were getting angry over the way that the theories of Sigmund Freud had been used by business and government to control and manipulate the masses. We then saw a shift from trying to control unwanted emotions to 'letting it all hang ourt." We today talk about this next phase of creating the all consuming, all desiring self.

The first word in the firstr step of the AA program is "we." We admitted we were powerless and that our live had become unmanagable. It is ofen difficult from people to come into the body of recovery or the body of Christ because of our need to be a sovreign self. Even after we supposedly surrender to Christ, our 'struggle' with sin is directy result of our failure to admit complete defeat. We will discuss this today.
