Welcome to the season finale of The Crew Up North Podcast! I thought it would be fun to wrap up season one (and 2024) by putting together a Best Of clips episode! I’ve had some amazing guests on and they’ve all been so wonderfully open and gracious with their time and conversations. They’ve given us a glimpse into their film careers with a ton of information, tips, stories, and of course, humour. I couldn’t be more grateful to them for being part of season one. 

Speaking of crew, I can’t close the season off without saying a BIG thank you to my own crew: Carter Belanger at Landis Lake Films and Nathaniel Lachance at NCL Media. The show literally could not have gone on without them. I have received so many positive comments about the quality of the show, and the past 6 episodes would not have been remotely the same without their expertise. Thank you, guys!

So…. The dog ate my podcast. No but like, for real. Hubert the hound dog ate the SD card with the original version of this episode, so here we are for round two (and hopefully it’s less tasty)! Northern actor Daren Sullivan was kind enough to join TCUN and host Jennifer Tocheri twice to discuss his stumble into the film world that led to his second career. As a seasoned background performer, Daren leads us through the process of becoming a full union member, what the background community means to him, what the heck is a Stand In, and why he wore a speedo for Mark McKinney. Daren also gives a major shoutout to the hardworking crew in the area, and tells us about his up-and-coming acting projects! 

I have known Daren for years and am lucky enough to call him a friend. He is, in my opinion, a major reason the background community is closely connected. He's been the initiator of our group gatherings and BG Chat, all in the name of supporting each other.

Welcome back, Crew! Key Grip Tyler Emms joins TCUN and host Jennifer
Tocheri for episode 5 to talk about his 15-year career in the Northern Ontario
Film Industry! Snacking on appetizers from local spot, Moose’s Cookhouse, we
get into what exactly a grip is, how he works succinctly with the electric department and camera team to bring the cinematographer’s vision to life, and how he advanced to Key Grip very early in his career. Tyler also reveals some creative solutions that actually landed him IN a scene, how he stays resilient in hard times and the MAJOR bucket list show he was able to work on. Plus, after 15 years, how the body takes a toll.

Welcome back, Crew! Producer and Production Manager, Justin Kelly,
joins TCUN and host Jennifer Tocheri for episode 4 to talk about his incredible

Gd2Go, we get into the dynamics of producing films in Northern Ontario. Justin
reveals the skillsets of a good producer, his passion for set safety and
fostering collaboration on set. We also discuss developing the labour pool in
this region, advice for anyone thinking about getting into the industry and
encouragement for those who are already in the grind. Plus, Justin's love
for Northern Ontario and… would a studio really attract more shows here??  

Justin Kelly has worked on over a hundred shows including the
Emmy nominated TV series, What We Do in the Shadows and Indie film, Antibirth,
which premiered at Sundance!

Happy Halloween, Crew!

Sudbury-based horror writer and director, Richard Barlow, joins The Crew Up North Podcast and host Jennifer Tocheri for a special Halloween episode! We settle in and munch on some ghoulish freeze-dried marshmallow eyeballs from Permafrost, as Richard discusses the making of his horror anthology, Glimpses of the Grim. In 2023, Richard pooled together help from the local film community to create a series of 6 horror micro shorts. Produced entirely in Sudbury, ON, he’s sharing the evolution of seasons one and two, how he comes up with his ideas, tips on creating projects on a shoe-string budget, the behind the scenes details on how they filmed the season finale as a SIX MINUTE one-shot episode, plus does anything really scare him??! Season one has already received multiple nominations and a win for Best Death while making its rounds in film festivals. Season two premiered October 15th, with new episodes being released Tuesdays and Thursdays. You can catch the talent of many local actors (including yours truly) throughout both seasons!
