Check out the upcoming retreats that I'll be hosting at wendybrandcoaching.com/retreat.
My guest this week, Gifty Enright, is a highly regarded speaker, writer, and coach. In addition to her book, Octopus on a Treadmill, she is regularly published in newspapers and magazines.
I hope you'll listen to this inspiring conversation with Gifty, here are some of the takeaways:
1. Get your priorities straight. We should be prioritizing our lives in a way that prioritizes our well-being.
a. Mental health
b. Close personal relationships
c. Physical health
d. Income
Prioritizing in this way allows us to make decisions in a different way and potentially prevent burnout.
2. You can have it all. It takes skills to have it all and not burn out. But, HAVING it all does not mean DOING it all.
3. Part of avoiding burnout is being comfortable asking for help. You must give people the privilege of helping you.
4. It takes a village, but we have to build the village. Develop the relationships that can build your village. Having close relationships helps you feel supported and safe and creates oxytocin, which can help with burnout prevention.
5. You have to live equitably. Research shows that at least 75% of the work in the household is done by women. Those in these relationships think they are in an equitable relationship. You have resources at your disposal, in addition to building a community to support you, Make sure that everyone in the family has a job. If the kids can stand up straight and walk, they need a job.
6. While you’re busy doing everything on your own, trying to prove to everyone that you’re a badass, what you’re doing is alienating people, creating a distance, letting people in, let in the support. Build those relationships, it’s good for you, it’s good for the hormones and it’s good for the community.
7. You are responsible for setting your own boundaries and in order to set your own boundaries, you have to have strong self-esteem.
8. You are responsible for your own well-being. You can’t pawn that off on someone else. It is up to you to get your priorities straight.
9. The fact that you can work 12 hours doesn’t mean you should.
10. How do you effectively promote yourself? Understand your worth, know what you bring to the table, and then make sure others know what you bring to the table. When you know it and build that confidence, it starts to ooze out of you.
11. Know what makes you happy and figure out a way to earn a living with that.
