If you saw this trailer from Empire Waist, then you probably were intrigued, leaned in, and wanted to know more… right? Right. Well, we have all the news about this movie, the characters, and where you can watch it!

The recently released (TODAY!) film Empire Waist is a refreshing, heartfelt story that highlights the complexities of self-esteem, body image, and empowerment. Directed by Claire Ayoub, the movie follows a group of high school girls navigating the pressures of societal beauty standards while forming a bond over shared experiences through fashion and self-acceptance. With its rich characters, strong performances, and timely themes, Empire Waist is not only a story about fashion, but also one about embracing self-worth.

At the heart of Empire Waist are its diverse characters, each of whom brings a unique perspective to the conversation about body image. The film centers around two main characters: Lenore, played by Mia Kaplan, a budding designer who feels the weight of others’ expectations; and Kayla, played by Jemima Yevu,who uses humor as a defense mechanism against the insecurities she faces.

In addition to the characters Lenore and Kayla, we are introduced to her bold and dynamic crew: Diamond, played by Kassandra Tellez, Marcy, played by Daisy Washington, and Tina, played by Holly McDowell. Together, they form a friend group of young teens whose experiences echo the real-world struggles of many teens (and adults)!

This movie is not only for teens… the messages are also for the adults- the parents, family members, and teachers who impact our lives as well! Ms. Hall, played by Jolene Purdy, is the peppy and loving and encouraging teacher we all should have in our lives and Lenore’s parents, played by Rainn Wilson and Missy Pyle, give us a real dynamic of how our parents can positively encourage or negatively impact our dreams and desires.

Lenore becomes the emotional core of the movie as she learns to assert herself not only as a designer but also as a person who deserves to be valued regardless of her size. This character arc speaks volumes about the importance of self-love, making Empire Waist an essential film for anyone who has ever felt marginalized by conventional beauty standards.

Having had the chance to attend the LA Screening and have TCF moderate the Q&A panel discussion, this move brought us to tears. The layers and levels of messaging was impactful. Listening to the audience cheer, laugh, and sniff throughout the movie was incredibly affirming.

Kara, (@iamjuicyJohnson) our NYC Contributor, attended the NY screening and had this to add: “Empire Waist is a heartwarming and empowering film that beautifully resonates with anyone who’s ever felt marginalized by societal standards. It spoke directly to the teenage girl within me, championing the idea that women in larger bodies deserve success, love, and happiness.

“The dynamic duo, Lenore and Kayla, serve as inspiring role models, encouraging viewers to embrace their true selves and take up space unapologetically. Artfully crafted and emotionally engaging, Empire Waist is a celebration of body positivity and resilience that will surely leave a lasting impact!”

Now, we will not give the whole movie away, since TODAY is the nationwide release of the movie in select theaters! Especially with a few fun fun and exciting cameos towards the end, that just makes it all perfectly come together!

Okay so, I know what you’re thinking! Who cares for plus size floral prints in 2023, right!? Before you crucify me, please hear me out! Florals have, in a sense been collectively banned by the plus size community for more than a few years. Women have turned their backs to plus size floral prints calling them ‘matronly’, stating that they’ll make you appear wider in size and that they should be restricted to warmer weather and/or occasion wear.

Although, I too have fallen victim to this community wide ban, I have to pay homage where the credit is due. I vividly recall my college freshman days (circa 2006), struggling to find stores that even carried my size, let alone fashionable options.

I was forced to learn how to make it work with the alternatives I was provided. Floral prints were one of those ‘ole reliables’ I could always bet on. With that being said, I think plus size floral prints deserve the same loyalty it showed us!

People complain that floral prints of smaller sizes can easily make a woman appear larger. In my experience, the fit of the clothing is much more significant than the scale of the print.

Ensure that your clothing is not too tight on your frame and that it’s comfortable. If you’re clothing fits properly, you don’t have to spend as much time dwelling over the size of the selected pattern.

Find floral patterns with colors that coordinate well together. Look for colors that compliment your complexion and will make you stand out. Depending on how much you like to shine, find colors that contrast well together, or bright florals with a dark base to make the pattern pop.

If you’re having trouble deciphering what colors suit you best, refer to a color wheel!

The best way to amplify a look is to add accessories. Keeping accessories simple is often the golden rule, but let’s be serious for a moment. If you know me, simple is a rarity in my vocabulary.

Come to think of it, so are rules haha. I love to pair basic prints with statement jewelry, and complex florals with thin, layered chains. When it comes to adding shoes to the mix, my absolute favorite way to style feminine florals is to add combat boots and a Moto jacket!

It’s the balance, baby!

Confidence is truly key! Wear what makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. Don’t be afraid to experiment with florals of different sizes, colors and articles of clothing (ie. skirts, swimwear, jackets).

You’ll never know what works best for you if you don’t explore what lies outside of your comfort zone.

My hope is that this quick read makes you cherish florals a bit more. Let’s be more appreciative of floral prints because before we even had the opportunity to be selective in our fashion choices, florals were there for us!

Can I tell you about how wearing a two-piece plus size swimsuit changed my life? I’m willing to bet, if I surveyed 100 plus size women, asking them to describe their first bikini experience, many would report that it started in dread. Fear of putting on a bikini creates much anxiety for plus size women because society has taught us that only slim, hour glass shapes are “perfect” for two-piece swimwear.

Judgement, self-doubt, internalized fat-phobia coupled with a lack of options that provide structure and support are all reasons I’ve heard from women who have shied away from bikinis.

With all these factors playing against us, would you believe me if I told you that my first time wearing a two-piece plus size swimsuit was a total confidence booster?

I remember quite vividly the day I got my first two piece in the mail. It was a hot pink number, made to be seen! My bikini was part of GabiFresh’s first collection with Swimsuits for All. I had seen her collection on social media and TCF and was in awe of how good everyone looked in it. I was excited, but also nervous.

What if everyone thinks I look stupid? What if I’m destined for a life sentence of only one piece swimwear with an oversized t-shirt on top??

I recall standing in front of the mirror with my eyes closed as a tried on each piece. When I was finished securing the tie around the neck of the top, I took a deep breath in…. and opened my eyes!

Once I opened my eyes, my mouth fell open! Not from looking atrocious, but from the exact opposite. I was in love. The swimsuit was high waisted, allowing the smallest part of my waist to been display. The material was strong and stretchy, holding my stomach in.

Standing in the mirror, I felt like Retro Barbie. I was ready for the beach. Fast forward about 2 weeks, and I was on the beach with friends. While surveying a spot to claim, anxiety set in once again.

Being alone in the mirror is different than baring all for the public beach. Once we got found a small section and I sat down with my oversized tee and bikini underneath, magic happened. 

As I looked around the beach, I wasn’t the only curvy woman with a two piece on. There were several, all stunning. None of these women had coverups on. And it made me feel so silly to have a t-shirt on. I took if off, and smiled. I never imagined something as simple as pushing past my fear of bikinis, would elevate my confidence the way it did. 

Wearing a two-piece plus size swimsuit allowed me to focus on what I love on my body, rather than going to war with myself. I found a new appreciation for my body that walks with me to this day.

Some people may stare. Some may approach you and compliment how great they think you look. You can’t control the opinions of others.

The only way to combat negative input is to value your opinion most. I have learned through the years that confidence is mostly tuning the world out and believing in yourself. It felt so empowering to be a part of a movement of full-figured women who created a space where there was none.

You never know who you’re inspiring by just being yourself.

It is really exciting to learn of a designer whose creativity and hard work have given them a platform to expand and grow into their vision. One designer whose work has done just that is TEREA by Andrea Pitter, the current winner of Amazon’s Making the Cut.

For the past 10 years, Andrea Pitter has built up her bridal line Pantora, with the mission to “transform engaged women into breathtaking brides with her stunning collections of bridal ensembles.” It is no surprise that Andrea leveraged her skills “pairing of signature classic silhouettes and modern details” that scored her the win with Amazon’s Making the Cut!

And guess what? Andrea’s new line at Amazon, TEREA by Andrea Pitter, includes plus sizes up through a size 5X!

We had a chance to chat with the Fashion Institute &Technology alum, to learn about her experience with the show, a little bit about her background as a bridal designer and why she is a designer that you ought to know!

TCF: TEREA is “size inclusive, sizes ranging from XXS-5X, age inclusive and style inclusive.” Was this always intentional? Did Making the Cut help you expand into plus sizes?

AP: TEREA, is my cobrand with Amazon. Inclusion has always been a priority to me since the very first day I started my business and those we are in service to; being intentional is a requirement.

TCF: What do you envision for the TEREA brand? Who is this TEREA customer?

AP: I envision people young and old, near and far and regardless of size donning the brand.

TCF: TEREA by Andrea Pitter debuted on Amazon, where do you envision the brand growing/going?

AP: TEREA is an Amazon backed brand, I just hope for it to touch as many people as possible. I love to see how the pieces are incorporated into a new customer’s existing wardrobe.

TCF: Let’s talk about your journey, before Making the Cut, how did you get started with designing?

AP: I started Pantora when I was 12 years old. I knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer. I had become obsessed with fashion and clothing construction. Once I graduated college and gained some industry experience, I decided to open my own showroom.

TCF: 12 years old!? Wow, that is so impressive! Can we stay here a bit, so you are a bridal designer first with Pantora; how do you feel this background helped you with your journey with Making the Cut?

AP: I think my entrepreneurial journey helped me with Making The Cut. I have been relentless in my pursuit towards success. I’ve had long days, even longer nights. My ability to pivot and get to the end of difficult situations is what prepared me for my journey on Making The Cut.

TCF: Were you catering to plus size brides before? What is one thing you’ve noticed about designing for plus brides that many other brands miss?

AP: I was catering to plus size brides before the show. One thing I noticed about designing for plus size brides, and any bride really is that they essentially all want access to the same designs. Every one of our dresses has the ability to be ordered in size; which is very rare for the bridal industry. 

TCF: When we talk about inclusivity, I’ve noticed diversity being called out in your marketing- very intentional, could you share your thoughts around this?

AP: I would love to not have to call out diversity, however, many women who are searching for special garments don’t necessarily see themselves, and can make the assumption that the clothes are not available to them and it’s important for me to lay out the facts in our marketing.

The facts are that we go up to a size 44 in bridal, and if we ever found that we needed to make accommodations, for anyone else those accommodations would be made.

TCF: Well, Andrea you sure have caught our attention and we are so excited to have learned so much about you. Is there anything else we should be on the lookout for?

AP: We created a Bridesmaids line that goes up to a size 44 and I’ve always felt that it ain’t no fun unless the bridesmaids can have some. It’s really great to include the entire bridal party and eliminate some of the struggles that they might have encountered while shopping for entourage dresses.

Do you see why we had to introduce you to this inspiring designer? or those of you who have been looking for wear to work essentials, pieces that you can interchange with you life, or have been looking for a solid foundation in your clothes, You should definitely give this brand a look!

So, when Lincoln debuted the “Coastal Mornings” scent with Serena Williams at Art Basel  and shared a reimagined interior sanctuary with Rejuvenation Moods, it caught our attention!

Lincoln celebrated its centennial at Art Week in Miami to celebrate Lincoln’s never-ending quest of “serenity, smoothness, and the “Power of Sanctuary”.”

The mysterious part? (We love a good teaser!) Serena Williams even grabbed our attention on the ‘gram with the news of her possibly dropping a new fragrance—but this is not one that you or I can wear—we can only experience, exclusively inside of Lincoln Star™ Concept vehicle. Futuristic, luxurious, and calming? Oh, we’re listening now. 

An interior sanctuary inside your car? We are always here for things that inspire or make space for an improved mental health experience. Always… and with the traffic we’ve endured and will continue to brave?

If there is anything that could make a 2-hour drive in traffic, to go 30 miles, smoother? We need to know all the details, and of course, share them with you!

Before the activation even began, Lincoln invited a few influencers down to Art Basel, keeping them completely in the dark about this secret sanctuary reveal!

Ambassadors received an invite and perfume bottle in the mail and were told to show up in Miami ready for a huge announcement! There was no call out to Lincoln, just a bottle, an invite, and a mysterious hint that Serena Williams would somehow be involved.

The mystery and suspense, right?  

When the influencers arrived at the SLS Hotel, they were excitedly surprised to find out this was all a part of Lincoln’s year-round commitment to the “Power of Sanctuary”. Lincoln announced that the invite and perfume bottle, received just days earlier, is in fact one of the car’s sensory-provoking Rejuvenation offerings- but one that can only be experienced INSIDE a Lincoln vehicle.

But the activation did not stop there…

Lincoln hosted “The Intersection of Scent & Sanctuary” with tennis icon and Lincoln brand ambassador Serena Williams to speak on the “future of sanctuary and the importance of scent.” She was joined by Estee Lauder’s Design & Hospitality Creative Director Gabriele Chiave, and Lincoln Interior Design Chief Ryan Niemic.

This is kind of ingenious, right? For those of you who are returning to work and the ridiculous commutes they require, being able to take self-care and serenity into your car is quite smart.

Some of us already use car fresheners, but what if we could really ideate a spa-like experience inside of our car? From scent to massages, to lighting, playing off our senses and stresses? How many of you already find yourself zoning out in your car for 30 minutes before you even get inside your home?  What if that time could be spent intentionally, to relax, relate, and release?! 

Following the panel, Lincoln unveiled an installation featuring the Lincoln Star™ Concept. Revealed earlier this year, the concept hints at the brand’s design for its future electric vehicles. The Lincoln Star™ Concept also calls for a reimagined interior sanctuary with Rejuvenation Moods, a “harmonized sensory experience involving massage, motion graphics, audio and even scent.”

Did you catch that? A car that provides aromatic scents, chairs that massage you, specific audio sounds that transport you to relaxation, and more? This is what these Rejuvenation Moods are all about!

Lincoln’s Rejuvenation Mood Scents are a unique and brand-specific experience and make drivers feel inspired and at ease. We are here for anything that will help keep us at ease, especially while we tackle the stress from the traffic on the road.

The installation showcased that the scent Serena teased on her channels was in fact, “Coastal Mornings!” Coastal Mornings is one of three Rejuvenation Moods in the Lincoln Star™ Concept and uses “gentle, oceanic sounds, a fragrance of sea mist and the soft, warm glow of the sun with dynamic lighting throughout the cabin to replicate a stroll on the beach at sunrise.”

Can you already imagine this type of experience?

 Jenee of HighLowLuxxe shares that “Scent inspires my mood for the day, how I feel for the day. Coastal Morning scent gave me a feeling of calmness, but also you have some warm notes in there-a little bit of both. A lot of calm but of warmth and getting ready and amped up for the day.”

Last year, Marie Denee conceptualized a unique opportunity for BIPOC designers, with the ideation of The Cultivate Awards. A whole program that not only gave the winner $10,000 in an award but also the opportunity to collaborate with Eloquii, with their very own capsule collection!

Well, do we have exciting news to share with you! As we ready for year 2 of the Cultivate Awards, we are here to debut the winner of last year’s Cultivate Awards, the Melissa Mercedes x Eloquii Capsule Collection!

No, for reals… Walmart has been busy! This new line is Walmart’s latest effort in bringing forward great brands to “establish Walmart as a destination for quality, on-trend fashion.” Eloquii Elements now joins Walmart exclusive brands, like private brands Time and Tru, Terra & Sky, Wonder Nation and George, as well as elevated brands like Scoop, Sofia Jeans by Sofia Vergara.

Starting TODAY, Eloquii and Walmart bring us Eloquii Elements, the new private of “everyday fashion for women sizes 14-28.”

With Eloquii Elements, we can expect everyday fashion for “women who are on-the-go, from juggling family and work demands to finding creative ways to socialize during this new normal.”

“Design, quality, fit and fashion have always been at the heart of everything we do – it’s the reason we’re here.  We know everyone deserves great fashion — we’ve priced our items from $17 for a signature puff sleeve tee to $50 for a faux leather jacket, complementing Walmart’s portfolio of brands.” Mariah Chase, CEO of ELOQUII.

They have tapped the style and fit experts at Eloquii to give you the style a feel of the Eloquii vibe, at $50 and UNDER. FIFTY DOLLARS AND UNDER.

The debut fall collection gives us Eloquii’s signature details like romantic ruffles, dark florals, faux leather and sophisticated pleats. You can expect dresses, denim, jackets and more- all starting at $17!

And get this… For those in Canada, you are in for a treat with Eloquii Elements available in select Walmart Canada stores!

This is a smart collaboration. This introduces the Eloquii brand to a much larger audience and makes plus size fashion a bit more accessible.
