Paul was looking to create a sitcom in a cheap location to appeal to broadcasters. He'd seen Roger & Val had just got in on BBC Two had thought that the idea of two people in one set was a brilliant, cheap and efficient way of making a sitcom. He got together with co-writer Tim Reid and the pair happened upon the idea of two people in a car travelling two and from work. Paul took his rough script to childhood friend Peter Kay for him to look over before they sent it off to the BBC. Kay was so impressed he wanted to join the project and the rest is history!
