The Cutting Room Floor

It's our 50th episode! In this edition of The Cutting Room Floor, Alex and Erik reminisce about the podcast. Alex then discusses the gaping hole in logic in the trailer for Every Day, with the episode culminating in a discussion about the films we're looking forward to for the remainder of 2018.

Hollywood has, for better or worse, had a longstanding tradition of adapting everything under the sun into a film. We've seen books and plays adapted to the big screen and, as we've entered the modern era, seen the same treatment offered to graphic novels and comic books, too. We've even seen fringe items like toys successfully adapted with The LEGO Movie and Trolls. Nevertheless, there's been one genre that hasn't been able to rise above the fray: video games. While films about video games — think Wreck-it Ralph or Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle — have performed well, for whatever reason, adaptations of existing franchises simply have not been good or successful. In this episode, we take a look at some of the worst offenders.

Join us as we discuss World of Warcraft, Mortal Combat, Street Fighter, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Prince of Persia, and briefly touch upon Assassins Creed and Doom.

Have you ever re-watched a movie, and noticed something that blew your mind? A subtle character trait that revealed a character was the killer in the first five minutes, or perhaps something in the background that gives away the twist ending? In this episode, we will be discussing movies that have hidden clues spread throughout them.

These films have been released for a while, but it's worth noting that MAJOR SPOILERS will be discussed for the following films: The Departed, The Sixth Sense, Inception, The Prestige, Unbreakable, Arrested Development, and Futurama.

When you're a fan of something, you tend to be passionate about it — really passionate. This is particularly true for fandoms that are adapted to the screen, big or small. Whether it's a book, comic, video game, or something else, you want the adaptation to be good — and odds are, you probably have some strong opinions about how it should be done. Most of us will never get a chance to make our own big-budget movies, but — what if we did? Well, that's what we're going to look at right now…what if we got to make a movie?

There are a lot of awesome movie franchises out there — Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, James Bond — that have been around for a long time. We're not talking about those; we're talking about would-be franchises where a film was left wide-open for a sequel, and it completely tanked. No sequel for you, because your movie sucked!

Join us as we discuss Avatar: The Last Airbender, two jettisoned attempts to get a DC Cinematic Universe off the ground, and Seeker: The Dark is Rising. We'll get into why these series had loads of potential that was squandered, killing them before they could really develop.

At the turn of the century, approximately 350 major releases were issued into theaters. By 2013, that number had almost doubled. In fact, 51 more films were produced and released between 2012 and 2013 alone. As you can imagine, it'd be easy to get lost in that sea of celluloid. Whether it's because of the increasingly stiff competition, a film simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or whatever the case may be, there are any number of reasons a film might go unnoticed or under-appreciated. The following are four films we believe deserve a closer look.

In this episode of The Cutting Room Floor, we discuss movies that everyone felt were amazing but that, for us, just didn't live up to the hype. Join us as we discuss how, for one or both of us, the hype train didn't deliver when it came to The Avengers, The Matrix, Blade Runner, The Departed, and Frozen.

A horde of mutated birds descends upon the quiet town of Half Moon Bay , California. With the death toll rising, Two citizens manage to fight back, but will they survive Birdemic?

If that description sounds ludicrous, just wait until you give this episode a go. In this special edition of The Cutting Room Floor, we delve into what is considered one of the worst movies of all time, 2010's Birdemic.

Fluctuating audio. A nonsensical storyline. CGI from 1985. That's the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Birdemic. Join us for a discussion of the inane, where a romance and horror movie is bridged by the flimsiest of storytelling, where a green message is strung along by nothing more than talking points, and where news reports have Getty Images watermarked on their photos. You're in for a weird ride.

The Last Jedi reached heights of critical acclaim, was the highest grossing film of 2017, and landed only behind its predecessor on many lists, such as biggest opening weekend. While many fans enjoyed the film, for a significant amount, the film didn't meet their expectations. Most went about voicing their displeasure calmly and rationally. However, calm and rational rarely get heard. A vocal minority caused quite a stir, and in this episode, we discuss some of the backlash to The Last Jedi.

Luke Skywalker's peaceful and solitary existence gets upended when he encounters Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force. Her desire to learn the ways of the Jedi forces Luke to make a decision that changes their lives forever. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren and General Hux lead the First Order in an all-out assault against Leia and the Resistance for supremacy of the galaxy.

Picking up where we left off, this episode covers what we felt didn't quite work, or fell short in The Last Jedi. Join us as we discuss Canto Bight, a forced animal rights message, Phasma's underutilization, the unnecessary inclusion of Maz Kanata, and more!
