Cycling BC’s Provincial Head Coach, Joel Harwood, joins us on the podcast to talk about his new role and vision for building community and culture around cycling in BC.

Joel has been coaching mountain biking for close to 20 years in the Sea to Sky corridor and has been part of Cycling BC’s High-Performance program as a regional coach for mountain bike since 2017. Joel has a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from McMaster University, a Bachelor of Education and Teaching from Western University, and most recently completed a Master’s degree in Education from Simon Fraser University in 2021. Joel has been an educator in the Squamish school district for over 15 years teaching science, physical health & education, and outdoor leadership.

When Cory Ostertag and Angela Chang decided to sign up for the BC Epic 1000 they knew it wasn’t going to be easy but did they know it was going to be this hot? In this episode of the Cycling BC podcast, we talk to Cycling BC staffer Cory Ostertag and recent Cycling BC board member-elect, Angela Chang, about their experience riding the BC Epic 1000. The BC Epic 1000 is a gruelling 1,000+ km self-supported ultra-endurance bikepacking race through south-central BC. Cycling BC’s 2020 Community Award Winner for Adventure Rider of the Year, Sandra Walter, talks to us about her bikepacking adventures and how 2020 reminded her the value of having a plan B and maybe even a plan C when plan A gets thrown off track. With her race schedule sidelined in 2020, she opted to take the summer to explore many parts of the province by bike. She spent 10 days riding from Penticton to Harrison Hot Springs via Lillooet and the infamous Hurley road. She also hit the BC trail headed in the opposite direction riding from the Okanagan to Fernie, BC. In between her bike adventures she taught Cyclo-cross clinics and also founded the Girls Ride Club, a grassroots initiative to get more young women riding mountain bikes.
