August 31, 2025Meet The Pear Whisperer Who Outsmarted The Dreaded Psylla Insect and Revived Red Hook's OrchardsPieter Staats stared up into the tree, eyes moving carefully over his crop, and beamed. “Look at this,” he said, carefully fondling an almost-ripe Bartlett, a hint of pink shining through the yellow pear patina. “We worked very hard for these. They’re beautiful.” Staats then spied the leaves, a shiny forest green, most free of spots and curling. Then, he nodded to two pear pickers as they maneuvered a 12-foot aluminum ladder through the orchard. “I could hug this tree,” Staats said, pausing. “We’re looking at the finest, nicest pears in the Hudson Valley, certainly ones we haven’t had in...https://www.thedailycatch.org/articles/meet-the-pear-whisperer-who-outsmarted-dreaded-psylla-insect-and-revived-red-hooks-orchards/...more8minPlay

August 12, 2025Comments to the Catch: Boat Club, Solar Projects, Rhinecliff Station, Immigrants (July 28- Aug. 10, 2025)Letters to the Editor: To the editor: Re “Solar Proposal for Soros Family Estate in Rhinebeck Draws Opposition from Southlands, Artist Neighbors,” July 28. Kudos to Mr. Colombel for his solar project. I hope he succeeds. Opposition is following the timeworn NIMBY pattern: solar energy is great, just Not Here. Put it Somewhere Else. I had to shake my head when I read that representatives of the Southlands Foundation object to the proposed solar array because, among other reasons, it doesn’t comport with their mission of “conservation.” Conservation doesn’t mean only preserving a scenic status quo....https://www.thedailycatch.org/articles/comments-to-the-catch-boat-club-solar-projects-rhinecliff-station-immigrants-july-28-aug-10-2025/...more53minPlay
