The Spirit’s work in the life of a Christian begins in the work of salvation in bringing a person to faith in Christ. It is continued through the work of sanctification in helping the Christian to become progressively more like Christ throughout the course of his or her life. The Spirit also empowers and indwells believers, intercedes on their behalf, and equips them with special gifts for the service of God’s kingdom. He is the Comforter to the believer and aids us in properly interpreting the Bible.

It is clear from this story that God answers prayer. He hears the cries of His saints, and He acts according to His plans and our good. It is because of this reality in the power of prayer that we should maintain an active prayer life. God uses prayer not only to affect change in the world around us, but also as a means to affect change in our own hearts and lives as our will becomes more conformed to His will and purposes. If Jesus, being fully God, relied on the power of prayer in His life and ministry, how much more so do we need to be reliant upon prayer in our daily dependence upon God? 

Think about this: What can we learn about the importance of prayer from this account? Whom can you pray for this week for eyes to be opened to see the beauty of Christ?

Today is Tuesday, September 24, 2019 and here is your Daily Devo.

What kind of God would treat His enemies like this? Only Yahweh. The God who protected Elisha, his servant, and Israel, would have protected Syria also if they had sought refuge in Him. The shelter of God is available to all who turn to Him in repentance. God gave Ben-hadad these living examples of His supremacy, power, and transforming grace. But despite the military defeats, Naaman’s transformation, and these humiliations, the king refused to bow his knee to Yahweh. 

How does God humble us today? He gives us His Word (Isa. 66:2). He reveals His glory in creation. Sometimes we’re humbled under the weight of a crisis, a crisis that should make us cry out to God. Sometimes it’s the consequences of living in ongoing sin that humbles people, which leads them to bow to God in repentance (Ps. 107:12). God may also use the kindness of others Christians—or even our supposed enemies—to humble us. These are all acts of grace intended to move us to faith. 

Think about this: What can we learn about God’s character based upon His treatment of Israel’s enemies? What does Ben-hadad’s refusal to submit to God despite God’s kindness reveal about the king’s heart and character?

Today is Monday, September 23, 2019 and here is your Daily Devo.

Among other things, this account teaches us that God is in the business of opening eyes for people to see His grace (Ps. 146:8). Some may wish to attribute fortunate circumstances to blind luck or coincidence, but this account teaches otherwise—it is God who gives unseen protection to his people (Ps. 91:9-11). Jesus was aware of it. Jesus knew and lived under the unseen protection from the Father, even during the most pressing times in His earthly ministry. God is a refuge and deliverer. We need only eyes to see and hearts to believe it, both of which God is prepared to give generously to us. 

Think about this: What are some takeaways from the fact that God opened the eyes of Elisha’s servant? What are some things God has been opening your eyes to regarding His plan and purpose for your life?

Here is this week’s Christ Connection.

When Elisha succeeded the prophet Elijah, he asked for the same spirit that was in Elijah to be given to him. God granted Elisha’s request and revealed His presence through a miracle. Years later when Jesus prepared His followers to begin their ministry, He instructed them to wait for the Holy Spirit, who came upon them and confirmed His presence in miraculous ways. 

Have you given your life to Jesus? If not, please do so today. It is the greatest decision you could ever make. Jesus says that “all who come to me, I will not turn away.”

You can embrace the rescue of God by simply: 

* Admitting your need to God

* Asking Him to forgive you

* Trusting in Jesus alone to rescue you

* Following Jesus Christ, The King of your life, in faith from this day forward

The church is a sign and instrument of the kingdom of God, a people united by faith in the gospel announcement of the crucified and risen King Jesus. The mission of the church is to go into the world in the power of the Spirit and make disciples by proclaiming this gospel, calling people to respond in ongoing repentance and faith, and demonstrating the truth and power of the gospel by living under the lordship of Christ for the glory of God and the good of the world.

Today is Wednesday, September 18, 2019 and here is your Daily Devo.

In the case with Elijah and Elisha, we see a clear picture of what it looks like for one generation to pass down the truths of God to another generation. Of course, this responsibility isn’t limited to merely passing along truth as information, but rather the passing along of what it means to live out the truth of God’s unchanging Word in an ever-changing world. Elisha wasn’t merely receiving head knowledge from Elijah but truth that resulted in a change of heart, a change of lifestyle, and a changed purpose in living. 

We, too, have a similar calling in our day and age. We are to pass God’s Word onto the next generation. For many of you, that may involve serving in the children’s ministry or being actively involved in the discipleship of someone else. Whatever form it takes, the call is clear: fulfill the Great Commission. 

Think about this: What lessons do we learn from this account about the importance of passing on the truth of God’s Word to the next generation? How can you pass God’s truth on to the next generation?

Today is Tuesday, September 17, 2019 and here is your Daily Devo.

In Luke 9, Jesus called a man to follow Him, but the man said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house” (Luke 9:61). Notice the man seemed to say the same thing Elisha said, but instead of allowing it like Elijah, Jesus said, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (9:62). The reference to the plow sounds like 1 Kings, and so does this call. But notice Jesus didn’t accept this request. Why? For this reason: Jesus is greater than Elijah, and His call takes precedence over everyone and everything. Jesus demanded immediate obedience and wholehearted allegiance. Elisha was asked to follow a prophet, but we have been called to follow the Lord of glory. We must follow Him at once, and then deal with the other details later. A devoted disciple is ready to say, “You can have the world, but give me Jesus!” 

Think about this: Read Luke 9:57-62. What are the similarities between this passage and the calling of Elisha? Why do you think Jesus didn’t agree to the request in Luke 9:61 to go say good-bye before following Him?

The relationship between Elijah and Elisha recalls the importance of having and maintaining godly friendships. Godly relationships are capable of both challenging us and spurring us on to greater holiness in our lives. They can help identify remaining sin in our lives, as well as provide the encouragement and help to address any sin that may hinder growth as a believer. The Christian life is never meant to be lived alone, and any person wanting to become more like Jesus and reflect Him in all he or she does will need the sustaining help of godly relationships. 

Think about this: What can we learn about the importance of godly relationships as we consider the lives of Elijah and Elisha? Who is like an Elijah to you? Who is your Elisha?

Today is Friday, September 13, 2019 and here is your Daily Devo.

Previously in Israel’s history, God sent fire at the inauguration of the tabernacle worship (Lev. 9:24). It signified Yahweh’s acceptance of the sacrificial system. Later, David sacrificed, as ordered by God at Ornan’s threshing floor, and Yahweh answered with fire, signifying his acceptance of the offering (1 Chron. 21:26). David then said that this particular spot would be the place for the future temple (1 Chron. 22:1). Similarly, when Solomon completed and dedicated the temple, fire again fell, showing God’s acceptance of their worship (2 Chron. 7:1-3). Here in our story, the fire from heaven was a sure sign that God accepted Elijah’s sacrifice.
