Food systems around the world are becoming a major focus as populations are growing. On the African continent in particular food systems are rapidly changing due to increasing affluence, urbanization and globalization. Interestingly, the UNESCO Chair in African Food Systems was awarded to the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security hosted by the University of the Western Cape and co-hosted by the University of Pretoria, with the intention of harnessing African scholarship to address these challenges. What are we to understand by all of this?

How do men spend child support grant money? We now speak to Zoheb Khan, a Researcher, at the University of Johannesburg, UJ about research that found South African men spend childcare grants wisely. The survey analysis debunks the myth that men are more likely to spend the money on alcohol, tobacco and gambling.

Over the past three decades, millions of jobs have been lost globally and locally due to restructuring of economies, neo-liberal economic policies, economic crises and open trade agreements between countries. This period has seen a huge growth in informal employment, especially amongst women who have to combine family and work responsibilities. A significant number of these workers do homebased piecemeal work, often for big companies, but it is questionable whether this constitutes decent work.
