May 28, 2019Religious Freedom & Politics: What is the impact of religion in a secular state?There has been mixed reactions on Chief Justice Mogoeng calling for prayer in Parliament. Before swearing in new MPs in Parliament last week, Chief Justice Mogoeng called for prayer or meditation for solutions to corruption, unemployment and crime in the country. Then went on his knees and proceeded to pray. Other MPs stood and prayed. Many users then took to social media to react of Mogoeng's prayer. Stellenbosch University's Professor Jonathan Jansen, tweeted "We play with fire when a Chief Justice in a secular, constitutional state engages in Christian prayer in the exercise of his public duties; for the same reason public schools should not run school assemblies like church services", while ACDP leader Kenneth Meshoe said South Africa was blessed to have Chief Justice that knows how to pray. According to the country's constitution, religious observances can take place at state institutions - including public schools - provided it's done equitably and that attendance is voluntary.
