Yesterday Cosatu briefed the media on the outcomes of their three day Central Executive Committee meeting where they spoke about a number of things. One of those was how they plan to deal with the issue of retrenchments. Now you may be aware that we have been doing a series of interviews around the issue of employment. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by UN Member States in September 2015 is a universal roadmap for people and planet, addressing the key challenges of the 21st century, such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. Women's empowerment is recognized as a pre-condition to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the core of the 2030 Agenda. The SDGs include a transformative stand-alone goal on gender equality and women's rights (Goal 5) that addresses structural barriers to women's empowerment, along with important targets on gender equality in other Goals.

This Saturday, the 31st of August, will mark exactly 31 years since the headquarters of the South African Council of Churches, Khotso House, in central Johannesburg, was bombed for harbouring anti-apartheid groups. The bombing took place a year after a blast at the House of trade union federation COSATU. This morning we will look at the role played the Church and religious leaders in supporting, and opposing, South Africa's former apartheid regime. It has been seven years since striking miners at Marikana were shot down and 34 killed by police. It is regarded as the worst episode of state repression and violence in democratic South Africa. Despite the recommendations by the Farlam Commission for further investigations and prosecutions, as well as compensation to the families of those who were killed and the injured, little progress has been made. There are no signs of justice being served and in today’s show we discuss the impact on the victims of this horrific effect and the prospects of justice and compensation.
