#CitizensCorner: Digital safety of children online
Focus: This time of year, often sees parents are sharing the
achievements of their children on social media. While these posts
are genuinely joyous and celebratory, they can accidentally
expose sensitive information, such as children’s faces, school
names, or uniforms—potentially compromising their safety. These
oversights can lead to serious risks, including cyberbullying,
ransomware attacks, and spoofing.
In today’s digital age, children are also more connected than
ever, spending significant time online through social media,
gaming, sharing moments (including their current location or

place of stay), and online education. While the internet offers
exciting opportunities for learning, entertainment, and social
interaction, it also presents risks that could harm their well-being
and development.
Unfortunately, a lack of awareness among both parents and
children about these dangers creates a risky scenario. Vulnerable
children can become targets for online violence, exploitation, and
abuse.

Usually around this time of the year we hear the same cries about student funding especially those whose parents can't afford, but also don't qualify for NSFAS. So many students and parents call into the show seeking other avenues to access funds for fees. Well this may be a thing of the past as universities are starting to come up with their own funding methods. Wits University’s SRC is introducing a way that deserving students can complete their studies through the Kobo Ya Thuto: SRC Legacy Fund which they sell as the solution to deal with this problem.

Ratepayers and business forums under The Ray Nkoyeni Municipality are very frustrated and wanting some type of compensation from thei municipality for the suffering they had to endure because of a strike that has affected service delivery for about two months. Recently they again grouped themselves to clean their town to avoid the stench coming from uncollected refuse that could become a health hazard. At the centre is the fact that after the amalgamation of two municipalities, the Hibiscus Coast Municipality and Ezinqoleni Municipality, which took place in August 2016, the status of the municipality was raised from Grade 4 to Grade 5. In 2021. So this then affects the job grading. The municipality has now taken the issue to the Labour Court. Last week the KZN MEC for Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Thulasizwe Buthelezi has given the feuding parties three weeks to sort this out.
