#CitizensCorner: Digital safety of children online
Focus: This time of year, often sees parents are sharing the
achievements of their children on social media. While these posts
are genuinely joyous and celebratory, they can accidentally
expose sensitive information, such as children’s faces, school
names, or uniforms—potentially compromising their safety. These
oversights can lead to serious risks, including cyberbullying,
ransomware attacks, and spoofing.
In today’s digital age, children are also more connected than
ever, spending significant time online through social media,
gaming, sharing moments (including their current location or
place of stay), and online education. While the internet offers
exciting opportunities for learning, entertainment, and social
interaction, it also presents risks that could harm their well-being
and development.
Unfortunately, a lack of awareness among both parents and
children about these dangers creates a risky scenario. Vulnerable
children can become targets for online violence, exploitation, and
abuse.
