Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, has blamed some foreign nationals for contributing to the crime rate in South Africa - saying specific nationalities are involved in drugs, cash in transit heists, violence and even murders. Makhura, who was speaking at post-budget discussions yesterday, emphasized that he was not being xenophobic. Meanwhile, Home Affairs minister, Siyabonga Cwele says he has given directives for the review of the status of all foreign nationals who are running businesses in the country, including religious leaders. Cwele says recent scandals committed by church leaders coming from other countries under the guise of doing businesses in the country, requires more assessment on their status.

South Africa ranks sixth globally as a nation of drinkers; this ranking is according to the 2018 global status report on alcohol and health published by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Meanwhile, Dr Grieve Chelwa, a Senior Lecturer in economics at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town says given its societal harm, taxation of alcohol products must be urgently revisited.

We are now in conversation with former acting national police commissioner, Lieutenant general Khomotso Phahlane, who remains adamant that he is innocent of the fraud and corruption charges leveled against him. Phahlane who is facing the charges as accounting officer for the police, insists that former Independent Police Investigative Directorate head Robert McBride is pursuing a personal vendetta against him.
