  • City of Johannesburg considers Private Prosecution due to NPA inaction
    The Executive Mayor for the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba says the City is considering private prosecution on several criminal matters sitting with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) due to its inaction. Mashaba says has written to the South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, to express his "deep concern and frustration". He says the City has on numerous occasions sought to engage the NPA to raise such concern on the apparent lack of attention paid to fraud and corruption cases emanating from the City…

    Through the State Capture Inquiry South Africans have been privy to shocking details of the depths of corruption in the country. State Capture Inquiry was a Commission which is set up to investigate allegations of state capture, corruption and fraud in the Public Sector including organs of state. The Human Rights Commission recently hosted a panel discussion under the theme "The Impact of Corruption on Human Rights". The objective of the discussion was to understand the level, pervasiveness and form of corruption at local government level; to reflect on the negative effects of corruption on the protection of human rights; and to explore synergies and possibilities for cooperation between different sectors of society in the fight against corruption.

    The Right2Know (R2K) Campaign has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to implement all of the recommendations of the High-Level Review Panel on the State Security Agency. In particular, R2K wants the President to scrap the Secrecy Bill as recommended by the report and for all those implicated to be named and prosecuted. The report found that former President Jacob Zuma used the country's intelligence services for his own political and personal interests.
