Rory Gallocher tells us about SHRA’s approval of R1bn worth of social housing projects that will enhance the national social housing programme. These projects, spread in four provinces – Gauteng, Free State, Eastern Cape and Western, will yield 4322 units within the next three years. Social housing is a government subsidised rental programme aimed at benefiting people who earn between R1500 -R15000, to enable them to be closer to areas of economic activity.

Often when conflict arises in any country, it is the women and children who suffer the most. We all know that war causes chaos which leads to people fleeing their areas even their countries and most times end up in refugee camps. This past Thursday marked 31 years since the death of former Mozambican President Samora Machel. He died in a mysterious crash on the 19th of October 1986 in the Mbuzine Mountains in South Africa. We talk now to a young person from Mozambique to find out how his leadership has influenced young people in the country and how they view him today and also a photographer who met him in person and took pictures of him and other revolutionaries….

Today we focus on Royal Bafokeng Housing Project. Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) has embraced the South African Mining Charter, and developed a housing strategy that aims to promote home ownership for all its employees, in order to create a lasting legacy of sustainable benefits. The housing strategy has resulted in a R2.8 billion investment into the RBPlat Employee Housing Project which allows employees an opportunity to own their own homes and build equity over time.

In On Africa has launched its second edition of the Africa Country Benchmark Report. The report is an assessment of all 54 African countries across business, economic, political and social factors. One of finding in the report is that the lack of good quality data contributes to a lack of capacity and poor decision-making which can lead to a complete lack of awareness of issues until they have escalated. How does this report describe the state of these countries and how can it help them turn their situations around?
