Massena is being asked to make a decision that could shape this community for decades. So for this episode of The Daily Dose of Don, we're going through the debate from both nights.
This full episode features coverage from the August 19 Massena Town Hall and the August 20 Massena Town Planning Board meeting, along with my reactions, the biggest confrontations, and two original songs inspired by everything we heard.
You'll hear from supporters who believe the proposed data center could provide Massena with desperately needed investment, jobs and tax revenue.
You'll also hear from opponents demanding more scrutiny, pointing to more than 1,200 petition signatures and calling for a moratorium before Massena commits to something this large.
We get into:
🔥 The argument that Massena needs something to replace the economic losses left by industries like GM and Alcoa
💰 NYSSO's projection of roughly $1 million per year in tax revenue
👷 The company's claim of 200 jobs averaging around $100,000 per year
❓ Planning Board questions about what happened to previously promised jobs
💧 Closed-loop cooling and water-use claims
🔋 Battery storage, fire safety and emergency planning
🔊 Noise and concerns about sound traveling across the river
⚡ Questions about electricity and the grid
🏭 Concerns surrounding Massena's legacy industrial contamination
📄 Residents demanding greater transparency after the board received presentation materials the public didn't
🪶 Akwesasne Mohawks asking whether they're included among the project's “right stakeholders”
📖 Their request that future consultants specifically examine page 1175 of the application and their assertions concerning Mohawk land
🔎 Planning Board member Vance Fleury emphasizing that independent consultants still need to examine the application and verify information presented to the board
And then there's the music.
☮️ SLOW IT DOWN, MASSENA
An old-school acoustic protest song with a simple message:
“We ain't saying never—we're saying slow it down.”
🎸 PROMISES IN THE GROUND
A working-class rock anthem asking what happens when promises of jobs and prosperity collide with Massena's experience with promises from the past:
“If it's really what you say it is—PUT THAT PROMISE DOWN!”
This episode isn't just about whether you're for or against a data center.
It's about whether Massena has enough information to make the right decision—and what protections should be in place before that decision is made.
Two nights. Two meetings. Supporters. Opponents. The Planning Board. NYSSO. Akwesasne. And the music inspired by all of it.
This is The Daily Dose of Don: Massena's Data Center Battle.
