  • 2. Just Start

    Send us Fan Mail

we share the remarkable story of Hugh Howey, a bestselling author whose journey to writing success was anything but straightforward. Despite being a lifelong reader, Hugh spent 20 years in the "boiler room," overwhelmed by the gap between his writing and the works of his favorite authors. Frustrated, he stopped writing and spent two decades studying the craft, analyzing books, and attending literary events.

Everything changed at the 2009 Virginia Festival of the Book when mystery novelist Caroline Todd delivered a powerful piece of advice: "You just write." Inspired by these words, Hugh returned home and completed the rough draft of his first novel in two weeks, ultimately becoming a published author within weeks.

Today, Hugh has written and published over a dozen novels, with his works translated into more than 40 languages and adapted into successful TV dramas. Join us as we explore Hugh's incredible journey, the turning point that broke his 20-year writing hiatus, and the lessons we can all learn about overcoming perfectionism and taking action.
