Thursday, February 13: In this episode of The Daily Grind, John examines Luke 5:12-26, where Jesus displays both power and compassion in radical ways. First, He reaches out and touches a man with leprosy, healing him and restoring his dignity. Then, we see four friends tear through a roof to lower their paralyzed friend before Jesus, believing in His ability to heal. But instead of healing first, Jesus shocks the crowd by forgiving the man’s sins—revealing our deepest need is not physical healing, but spiritual restoration. The religious leaders are outraged—only God can forgive sins! So, to prove His authority, Jesus commands the man to walk, and he does. This passage challenges us to consider: Are we coming to Jesus for what we want, or for what we truly need? It also reminds us to be like the stretcher-bearers, bringing others to Jesus. Tune in to hear how Jesus’ power, compassion, and forgiveness can change your life today!

Wednesday, February 12th: In this episode of The Daily Grind, John dives into two powerful encounters with God—Isaiah’s vision in Isaiah 6:1-8 and Peter’s call in Luke 5:1-11. Both men experienced awe-inspiring moments that revealed God’s holiness and exposed their own unworthiness. Isaiah trembled before God’s throne, while Peter fell at Jesus’ feet, overwhelmed by His power. Yet, instead of rejection, both received a mission. Isaiah was cleansed and sent, and Peter was called to be a fisher of men. John explores how encountering God changes everything—how His presence humbles us, His grace restores us, and His call propels us into purpose. We’ll reflect on how God doesn’t wait for us to be perfect; He calls us as we are and transforms us along the way. Whether you feel unworthy, hesitant, or unqualified, this episode is a reminder that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Will you respond to His call?

Monday, February 10th: In this episode of The Daily Grind, John takes us to Luke 4, where Jesus steps into the synagogue of His hometown and delivers His mission statement. Reading from Isaiah, Jesus proclaims that He has come to bring good news to the poor, freedom for the prisoners, and sight for the blind. At first, the crowd is amazed, but when Jesus challenges their assumptions about God’s grace, their admiration turns to anger. Why did the people of Nazareth reject Him so quickly? John explores the historical and cultural backdrop of this powerful moment and what it reveals about human pride. Jesus’ message is good news for the humble but offensive to the self-righteous. Are we willing to accept His grace, even when it challenges us? This episode unpacks how Jesus’ mission reshapes our understanding of God’s kingdom and our place in it. Tune in for an inspiring and thought-provoking conversation that calls us to embrace the radical grace of Christ.

Friday, February 7th: While traveling to New York, I couldn’t record with Mariza, so today we’re rebroadcasting an episode from The Daily Grind vault. Have you ever felt familiar with something but later realized you didn’t truly know it? That’s how many of us approach the Gospels. We know snippets—Jesus' birth, the Prodigal Son, the Last Supper—but do we grasp the full story? The Gospels aren’t just random highlights from Jesus’ life; they are intricately woven narratives that challenge us to see Jesus as He really is. Years ago, a mentor challenged me to spend a full year reading the Gospels—one book per month, over and over. That practice changed the way I understood Jesus. Reading the whole story helps us see what each Gospel writer is emphasizing and how their narratives build toward a powerful revelation of Jesus’ mission. Mark, for example, places Peter’s confession right in the center of his Gospel for a reason—because recognizing Jesus as Messiah is pivotal, but understanding what kind of Messiah He is changes everything. So here’s my challenge: binge the Gospels. Read them like a new Netflix series you can’t put down. When you take in the whole story, you’ll encounter Jesus in ways you never expected.
Thursday, February 6: What does it mean to be truly free? In this episode of The Daily Grind, John Spencer explores the counterintuitive truth that real freedom is found not in power or control but in surrender to God. Drawing from Philippians 2:5-11 and Luke 4:1-12, John unpacks how Jesus demonstrated true humility and overcame temptation, showing us a better way to live. While the world offers shortcuts to success and satisfaction, Jesus teaches that lasting fulfillment comes through obedience and trust. Through His humility, He was exalted. Through His resistance to temptation, He secured victory. John breaks down how these passages challenge us to rethink our ideas of freedom and provides practical ways we can lean on Scripture and the Holy Spirit to stand firm in our faith. If you’ve ever felt trapped by sin, fear, or the pressure to be in control, this episode will encourage you. Jesus has already won the victory—our job is to follow Him. Tune in and discover how embracing humility and obedience leads to a truly liberated life.
Wednesday, February 5th: In this episode of The Daily Grind, John unpacks Luke 3:1-14 and John the Baptist’s powerful call to true repentance. Too often, we minimize our sin, make excuses, or shift the blame—just like flipping over a stained couch cushion, hoping no one will notice. But John the Baptist wasn’t interested in shallow apologies; he demanded repentance proven by a changed life. What does that look like for us today? We’ll explore the difference between true and false repentance, including recent examples of public figures who have “apologized” without true accountability. Proverbs 28:13 reminds us that hiding our sin leads to destruction, but confession and genuine change lead to mercy. Repentance isn’t about feeling bad—it’s about turning back to God and letting Him transform us. No matter how far we’ve wandered, God always welcomes us with open arms. Join us as we learn how to stop covering up our sin and start walking in the freedom of real repentance.
Tuesday, February 4th: Have you ever lost something important—your phone, your keys… your child? In this episode of The Daily Grind, John Spencer explores Luke 2:41-52, the story of when Mary and Joseph lost Jesus in Jerusalem. What seems like a simple family mishap actually raises some deep questions: Was Jesus being disobedient? Were Mary and Joseph bad parents? And what does it mean that Jesus grew in wisdom and grace? John unpacks the cultural and historical context of family travel in ancient Israel, showing how Jesus’ allegiance to His Heavenly Father redefined what it means to obey. He also challenges us to evaluate our own allegiances—what competes with God for first place in our lives? Finally, we’ll look at how Jesus, in His humanity, had to grow in wisdom and understanding, reminding us that spiritual growth is a lifelong process. Join us for an insightful and practical conversation on following Jesus more faithfully.
Monday, February 3rd: In today’s episode of The Daily Grind, John takes us to Luke 2, where Mary and Joseph bring baby Jesus to the temple for a dedication like no other. While it begins as an act of obedience, the moment is transformed when Simeon and Anna—two faithful servants of God—recognize Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. Simeon’s prophetic words reveal that Jesus will not only bring salvation but also division, exposing the hearts of all people. And to Mary’s surprise, Simeon tells her that a sword will pierce her own soul. What did he mean? Fast forward to the cross, where Mary stands watching her Son suffer—and the sword of sorrow pierces her heart. In this episode, John unpacks the meaning of Jesus as both the Savior and the Sword, challenging us to let Him reveal, refine, and redeem our hearts. How do we live in response to this reality? Join us as we explore how to breathe out confession, breathe in grace, and walk in the freedom of Christ.
Friday, January 31st: It’s Friday on The Daily Grind, which means John and Mariza are back for another deep dive—this time into John 13! This chapter marks the beginning of Jesus' final hours, opening with the stunning scene of Jesus washing His disciples' feet. Why would the King of Kings take on the role of the lowest servant? John and Mariza explore the radical humility of Jesus, the cultural significance of foot washing, and what it means to truly love and serve others. They also dig into the weighty moments of this chapter: Jesus' awareness of His impending betrayal, Peter’s bold (but ultimately shaky) loyalty, and the introduction of a new commandment—to love one another as Jesus has loved us. Along the way, John reflects on his own season of transition, and Mariza shares her personal wrestling with faith and what this chapter reveals about Jesus’ unconditional love. Whether you’re a lifelong believer or still figuring out where you stand, this episode will challenge you to consider what real servant leadership looks like and how Jesus' example invites us into a deeper, humbler way of living.
