Progress against heart disease, cancer, and drug overdoses is driving the numbers up, but longer lives don't automatically mean more meaningful ones. That's when newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer stepped in and asked everyday Americans to donate whatever they could, dimes and pennies included, to give her the foundation she needed.

During the pandemic, wages for the lowest-paid workers jumped 7%, briefly outpacing even software developers. Fast food chains were offering $20 an hour just to get people in the door, and for a moment, workers had the upper hand.
