  • Matthew 16:21-28
    Matthew 16:21-28 New International Version (NIV) Jesus Predicts His Death

    21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

    22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

    23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

    24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their lifea]">[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

    28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

  • Galatians 5:16-24
    Galatians 5:16-24 New International Version (NIV)

    16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatevera]">[a] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

    19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

    22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

  • Ecclesiastes 9:11-18
    Ecclesiastes 9:11-18 New International Version (NIV)

    11 I have seen something else under the sun:

    The race is not to the swift
        or the battle to the strong,
    nor does food come to the wise
        or wealth to the brilliant
        or favor to the learned;
    but time and chance happen to them all.

    12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:

    As fish are caught in a cruel net,
        or birds are taken in a snare,
    so people are trapped by evil times
        that fall unexpectedly upon them.

    Wisdom Better Than Folly

    13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.

    17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
        than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
    18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
        but one sinner destroys much good.

  • Psalm 119:97-104
    Psalm 119:97-104 New International Version (NIV) מ Mem

    97 Oh, how I love your law!
        I meditate on it all day long.
    98 Your commands are always with me
        and make me wiser than my enemies.
    99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
        for I meditate on your statutes.
    100 I have more understanding than the elders,
        for I obey your precepts.
    101 I have kept my feet from every evil path
        so that I might obey your word.
    102 I have not departed from your laws,
        for you yourself have taught me.
    103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
        sweeter than honey to my mouth!
    104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
        therefore I hate every wrong path.

  • Matthew 16:13-20
    Matthew 16:13-20 New International Version (NIV) Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

    13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

    14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

    15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

    16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

    17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,a]">[a] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hadesb]">[b] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will bec]">[c] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will bed]">[d] loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

  • Galatians 5:1-15
    Galatians 5:1-15 New International Version (NIV) Freedom in Christ

    5 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

    2 Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. 3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. 4 You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

    7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? 8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9 “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” 10 I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty. 11 Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. 12 As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

    Life by the Spirit

    13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesha]">[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”b]">[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

  • Ecclesiastes 7:1-14
    Ecclesiastes 7:1-14 New International Version (NIV) Wisdom

    7 A good name is better than fine perfume,
        and the day of death better than the day of birth.
    2 It is better to go to a house of mourning
        than to go to a house of feasting,
    for death is the destiny of everyone;
        the living should take this to heart.
    3 Frustration is better than laughter,
        because a sad face is good for the heart.
    4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
        but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.
    5 It is better to heed the rebuke of a wise person
        than to listen to the song of fools.
    6 Like the crackling of thorns under the pot,
        so is the laughter of fools.
        This too is meaningless.

    7 Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,
        and a bribe corrupts the heart.

    8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
        and patience is better than pride.
    9 Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit,
        for anger resides in the lap of fools.

    10 Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?”
        For it is not wise to ask such questions.

    11 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing
        and benefits those who see the sun.
    12 Wisdom is a shelter
        as money is a shelter,
    but the advantage of knowledge is this:
        Wisdom preserves those who have it.

    13 Consider what God has done:

    Who can straighten
        what he has made crooked?
    14 When times are good, be happy;
        but when times are bad, consider this:
    God has made the one
        as well as the other.
    Therefore, no one can discover
        anything about their future.

  • Psalm 119:89-96
    Psalm 119:89-96 New International Version (NIV) ל Lamedh

    89 Your word, Lord, is eternal;
        it stands firm in the heavens.
    90 Your faithfulness continues through all generations;
        you established the earth, and it endures.
    91 Your laws endure to this day,
        for all things serve you.
    92 If your law had not been my delight,
        I would have perished in my affliction.
    93 I will never forget your precepts,
        for by them you have preserved my life.
    94 Save me, for I am yours;
        I have sought out your precepts.
    95 The wicked are waiting to destroy me,
        but I will ponder your statutes.
    96 To all perfection I see a limit,
        but your commands are boundless.

  • Matthew 16:1-12
    Matthew 16:1-12 New International Version (NIV) The Demand for a Sign

    16 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

    2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.a]">[a] 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.

    The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

    5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

    7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”

    8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  • Galatians 4:21-31
    Galatians 4:21-31 New International Version (NIV) Hagar and Sarah

    21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. 23 His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.

    24 These things are being taken figuratively: The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written:

    “Be glad, barren woman,
        you who never bore a child;
    shout for joy and cry aloud,
        you who were never in labor;
    because more are the children of the desolate woman
        than of her who has a husband.”a]">[a]

    28 Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 At that time the son born according to the flesh persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now. 30 But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”b]">[b] 31 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
