  • John 3:16-21
    John 3:16-21 New International Version (NIV)

    16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

  • Luke 2:1-20
    Luke 2:1-20 New International Version (NIV) The Birth of Jesus

    2 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place whilea]">[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

    4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

    8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

    13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

    14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
        and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

    15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

    16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

  • Luke 1:57-80
    Luke 1:57-80 New International Version (NIV) The Birth of John the Baptist

    57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

    59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”

    61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”

    62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.

    Zechariah’s Song

    67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

    68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
        because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
    69 He has raised up a horna]">[a] of salvation for us
        in the house of his servant David
    70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
    71 salvation from our enemies
        and from the hand of all who hate us—
    72 to show mercy to our ancestors
        and to remember his holy covenant,
    73     the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
    74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
        and to enable us to serve him without fear
    75     in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

    76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
        for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
    77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
        through the forgiveness of their sins,
    78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
        by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
    79 to shine on those living in darkness
        and in the shadow of death,
    to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

    80 And the child grew and became strong in spiritb]">[b]; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.

  • Luke 1:39-56
    Luke 1:39-56 New International Version (NIV) Mary Visits Elizabeth

    39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

    Mary’s Song

    46 And Mary said:

    “My soul glorifies the Lord
    47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
    48 for he has been mindful
        of the humble state of his servant.
    From now on all generations will call me blessed,
    49     for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
        holy is his name.
    50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
        from generation to generation.
    51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
        he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
    52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
        but has lifted up the humble.
    53 He has filled the hungry with good things
        but has sent the rich away empty.
    54 He has helped his servant Israel,
        remembering to be merciful
    55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,
        just as he promised our ancestors.”

    56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

  • Hebrews 6:1-12
    Hebrews 6:1-12 New International Version (NIV)

    6 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,a]">[a] and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites,b]">[b] the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.

    4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallenc]">[c] away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

    9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

  • Ezekiel 4
    Ezekiel 4 New International Version (NIV) Siege of Jerusalem Symbolized

    4 “Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in front of you and draw the city of Jerusalem on it. 2 Then lay siege to it: Erect siege works against it, build a ramp up to it, set up camps against it and put battering rams around it. 3 Then take an iron pan, place it as an iron wall between you and the city and turn your face toward it. It will be under siege, and you shall besiege it. This will be a sign to the people of Israel.

    4 “Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the people of Israel upon yourself.a]">[a] You are to bear their sin for the number of days you lie on your side. 5 I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the people of Israel.

    6 “After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin of the people of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year. 7 Turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem and with bared arm prophesy against her. 8 I will tie you up with ropes so that you cannot turn from one side to the other until you have finished the days of your siege.

    9 “Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the 390 days you lie on your side. 10 Weigh out twenty shekelsb]">[b] of food to eat each day and eat it at set times. 11 Also measure out a sixth of a hinc]">[c] of water and drink it at set times. 12 Eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement for fuel.” 13 The Lord said, “In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them.”

    14 Then I said, “Not so, Sovereign Lord! I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth.”

    15 “Very well,” he said, “I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human excrement.”

    16 He then said to me: “Son of man, I am about to cut off the food supply in Jerusalem. The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair, 17 for food and water will be scarce. They will be appalled at the sight of each other and will waste away because ofd]">[d] their sin.

  • Psalm 89
    Psalm 89a]">[a] A maskilb]">[b] of Ethan the Ezrahite.

    1 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
        with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
        through all generations.
    2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
        that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
    3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
        I have sworn to David my servant,
    4 ‘I will establish your line forever
        and make your throne firm through all generations.’”c]">[c]

    5 The heavens praise your wonders, Lord,
        your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.
    6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
        Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?
    7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;
        he is more awesome than all who surround him.
    8 Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?
        You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

    9 You rule over the surging sea;
        when its waves mount up, you still them.
    10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain;
        with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
    11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;
        you founded the world and all that is in it.
    12 You created the north and the south;
        Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.
    13 Your arm is endowed with power;
        your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

    14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
        love and faithfulness go before you.
    15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
        who walk in the light of your presence, Lord.
    16 They rejoice in your name all day long;
        they celebrate your righteousness.
    17 For you are their glory and strength,
        and by your favor you exalt our horn.d]">[d]
    18 Indeed, our shielde]">[e] belongs to the Lord,
        our king to the Holy One of Israel.

    Matthew 10:24-33 New International Version (NIV)

    24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!

    26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.a]">[a] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

    32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

    Matthew 10:40-42 New International Version (NIV)

    40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

  • Ephesians 2:1-10
    Ephesians 2:1-10 New International Version (NIV) Made Alive in Christ

    2 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesha]">[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

  • Ezekiel 3:16-27
    Ezekiel 3:16-27 New International Version (NIV) Ezekiel’s Task as Watchman

    16 At the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die fora]">[a] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.

    20 “Again, when a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 21 But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.”

    22 The hand of the Lord was on me there, and he said to me, “Get up and go out to the plain, and there I will speak to you.” 23 So I got up and went out to the plain. And the glory of the Lord was standing there, like the glory I had seen by the Kebar River, and I fell facedown.

    24 Then the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet. He spoke to me and said: “Go, shut yourself inside your house. 25 And you, son of man, they will tie with ropes; you will be bound so that you cannot go out among the people. 26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be silent and unable to rebuke them, for they are a rebellious people. 27 But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’ Whoever will listen let them listen, and whoever will refuse let them refuse; for they are a rebellious people.
