  • Daniel 4:1-18
    Daniel 4:1-18 New International Version (NIV) Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Tree

    4 a]">[a]King Nebuchadnezzar,

    To the nations and peoples of every language, who live in all the earth:

    May you prosper greatly!

    2 It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs and wonders that the Most High God has performed for me.

    3 How great are his signs,
        how mighty his wonders!
    His kingdom is an eternal kingdom;
        his dominion endures from generation to generation.

    4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented and prosperous. 5 I had a dream that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed, the images and visions that passed through my mind terrified me. 6 So I commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret the dream for me. 7 When the magicians, enchanters, astrologersb]">[b] and diviners came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me. 8 Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar, after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods is in him.)

    9 I said, “Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me. 10 These are the visions I saw while lying in bed: I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous. 11 The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth. 12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches; from it every creature was fed.

    13 “In the visions I saw while lying in bed, I looked, and there before me was a holy one, a messenger,c]">[c] coming down from heaven. 14 He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches. 15 But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field.

    “‘Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven timesd]">[d] pass by for him.

    17 “‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people.’

    18 “This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me. But you can, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

  • Psalm 149
    Psalm 149

    1 Praise the Lord.a]">[a]

    Sing to the Lord a new song,
        his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.

    2 Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
        let the people of Zion be glad in their King.
    3 Let them praise his name with dancing
        and make music to him with timbrel and harp.
    4 For the Lord takes delight in his people;
        he crowns the humble with victory.
    5 Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor
        and sing for joy on their beds.

    6 May the praise of God be in their mouths
        and a double-edged sword in their hands,
    7 to inflict vengeance on the nations
        and punishment on the peoples,
    8 to bind their kings with fetters,
        their nobles with shackles of iron,
    9 to carry out the sentence written against them—
        this is the glory of all his faithful people.

    Praise the Lord.

  • Luke 4:1-13
    Luke 4:1-13 New International Version (NIV) Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

    4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempteda]">[a] by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

    3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

    4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’b]">[b]”

    5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

    8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’c]">[c]”

    9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

    “‘He will command his angels concerning you
        to guard you carefully;
    11 they will lift you up in their hands,
        so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’d]">[d]”

    12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’e]">[e]”

    13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

  • 1 John 3:11-18
    1 John 3:11-18 New International Version (NIV) More on Love and Hatred

    11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,a]">[a] if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.

    16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

  • Daniel 3:19-30
    Daniel 3:19-30 New International Version (NIV)

    19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace.21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

    24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”

    They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”

    25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

    26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,come out! Come here!”

    So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

    28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way.”

    30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

  • Psalm 20
    Psalm 20 New International Version (NIV) Psalm 20a]">[a] For the director of music. A psalm of David.

    1 May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
        may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
    2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
        and grant you support from Zion.
    3 May he remember all your sacrifices
        and accept your burnt offerings.b]">[b]
    4 May he give you the desire of your heart
        and make all your plans succeed.
    5 May we shout for joy over your victory
        and lift up our banners in the name of our God.

    May the Lord grant all your requests.

    6 Now this I know:
        The Lord gives victory to his anointed.
    He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
        with the victorious power of his right hand.
    7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
        but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
    8 They are brought to their knees and fall,
        but we rise up and stand firm.
    9 Lord, give victory to the king!
        Answer us when we call!

  • Luke 3:15-22
    Luke 3:15-22 New International Version (NIV)

    15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you witha]">[a] water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you withb]">[b] the Holy Spirit and fire.17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

    19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

    The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus

    21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

  • 1 John 3:1-10
    1 John 3:1-10 New International Version (NIV)

    3 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,a]">[a] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

    4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

    7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

  • Psalm 16
    Psalm 16 A miktama]">[a] of David.

    1 Keep me safe, my God,
        for in you I take refuge.

    2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
        apart from you I have no good thing.”
    3 I say of the holy people who are in the land,
        “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
    4 Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
        I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
        or take up their names on my lips.

    5 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
        you make my lot secure.
    6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
        surely I have a delightful inheritance.
    7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
        even at night my heart instructs me.
    8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
        With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

    9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
        my body also will rest secure,
    10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
        nor will you let your faithfulb]">[b] one see decay.
    11 You make known to me the path of life;
        you will fill me with joy in your presence,
        with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

  • Luke 3:1-14
    Luke 3:1-14 New International Version (NIV) John the Baptist Prepares the Way

    3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

    “A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
    ‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
        make straight paths for him.
    5 Every valley shall be filled in,
        every mountain and hill made low.
    The crooked roads shall become straight,
        the rough ways smooth.
    6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”a]">[a]

    7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

    10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.

    11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

    12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

    13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.

    14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

    He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
