Last night our basketball team opened season play against Veritas. The Scotties were defeated but the loss was more a reflection of early nerves and their short preparation time.

Last night we caught up with the Varsity and JV basketball teams as they prepare for Thursday’s game.

We spoke with senior Carrie Nelson to have her share some insights about the team.

As the Omicron variant spreads across the nation, the levels in Essex County have also increased. We are happy to report that life at St. Margaret's remains masked, distanced, and safe relative to the world beyond Water Lane. Students are attending classes as we move into the core of the 2nd trimester.

The weekend highlight was a raucous bingo night hosted by the Bells. Prizes included two lemon pound cakes by our Ms. Beverely, a sundry of candy bouquets, cases of soft drinks, and finally, a day off of classes with a friend  - complete with a free meal at N&N Burger.  

We are thrilled to share the news that Elle McKee Williams was crowned Holly Ball Queen of 2020-21 on December 28 at the 125th Holly Ball. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harrison Williams IV of Reedville.

Elle graduated from St. Margaret’s last year and now attends Virginia Tech. She was escorted by Zachary Marsten Swift of Reedville. Queen Williams chose as her attendants Kirsten Blair Smith and Ashley Nicole Burgess.

Since 1993, from Charlottesville, Virginia, Ken Myers has been producing The Mars Hill Audio Journal. Every two months, the two-hour compilation is produced for listeners.  On this Friday, we thought we would share a small portion of one of those interviews, with Ken Myers and author David Smith.  The topic is technology and learning - or more simply, what is true learning?

This is our final Merry Christmas on this . . . the 12th Day of Christmas . . . 

It is Epiphany … and it signals the end of the Christmas season as lights and trees will begin to come down. This week the school is opening for in-person classes … We are following a more stringent mitigation protocol for the next two weeks .. while everyone is being tested. The campus experienced its first winter storm … which resulted in many students delaying their return on campus.  We started classes today with about 80% of the students on campus.

Today we share last evening’s Christmas service from our own St. John’s Episcopal Church here in Tappahannock, Virginia.   Presiding over the service is Reverend Candine E. Three years before the founding of St. Margaret’s, King’s College at Cambridge University began the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.  That was in 1918, only six weeks after the end of World War I.

In 1928, this annual tradition was the first broadcast across the world.  It continues today as the Daily Thistle comes to you from King’s College, Cambridge. 

In 1919, Arthur Henry Mann, organist at King’s College, introduced an arrangement of “Once in Royal David’s City” as the processional hymn for the service. In his version that will soon begin, the first stanza will be sung unaccompanied by a boy chorister. The choir and then the congregation join in with the organ on succeeding stanzas. This has been the tradition for over 100 years. It is a great honor to be the boy chosen to sing the opening solo—a voice heard literally around the world by 75 million listeners.

Welcome to King’s College’s Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on this Christmas Eve.

Last night we celebrated our Christmas Service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, and that was part of the processional. I will share more as we head into our Christmas Break. Following the service, we then shared a dinner hosted by the 8th and 9th graders, who led a Christmas Trivia competition following dinner. Mr. Bell then shared that the school has already raised over $1.1 million this fall and part of the efforts will see a new STEAM program brought to the school for the 2022-23 school year.  It will include a number of new programs for the river, technology, computer coding, art classes, and the humanities - and there are more announcements to come. Our school is on the move!
