Today the tech community's productivity will take a dive as eyes focus on what happens at the Keynote of Apple's WorldWide Developer Conference (WWDC) happening at 10am US Pacific / 1pm US Eastern. With Apple's maniacal focus on secrecy, they are extremely successful in building anticipation. A few things are believed to be known... but how accurate are the rumors? For the first time I can remember, Apple's WWDC Keynote will be streamed live on Apple TV devices, which should be a change in the coverage. Today there is an enormous amount of outrage and anger out on the Internet about revelations that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) apparently has connections into 9 major Internet companies and has also been receiving all "metadata" about phone calls. The reality is that we as a country granted the NSA and other intelligence agencies broad sweeping powers of electronic surveillance in October 2001 when the US Congress passed the US PATRIOT Act and President Bush signed it into law. Those powers have only expanded in the time since. The big question is how to balance the legitimate needs of governments to track down criminals and terrorists against the legitimate needs of citizens for privacy and freedom. How much freedom/privacy are you willing to give up in the name of security and safety?

An ever-present challenge in our world of social networks is how to NOT get sucked into those networks when it is so incredibly easy to do so. How do we maintain the discipline to embrace those networks when we have the time - but to not get sucked in when we really should be doing something else?
